Found one in the oil pan canister in a recently bought otherwise good running F4L912 out of a scrapped Poclain excavator. The oil is clear, pressure is very nice.. 80 psi cold idle, 40 psi hot idle, 80 psi hot @ 2000. One "possibility" is that engine was rebuilt (by a monkey?) and the thrust washer just fell out. What do I know? Is it possible for Murphy to install it any other way than the right way? It could be that the engine had run like this for a while with the problem undetected. The Poclain was scrapped for unrelated reasons (track weardown, too costly to redo, very good price for steel, etc.).

I'm willing to rebuild but only if necessary. Being completely new to Deutz I'll thank anyone for suggestions or guidance. There IS about 1/8"-3/16" crank end-play, I found it while removing the flywheel to copy out the bolt pattern for a belt-pulley shaft to be made.

I think I'll open up the bottom for a good look-see to determine whatever I can, maybe install a new thrust-washer. I'd like to find out the exact engine condition while doing this and abort if I must for a complete teardown. That's plan A at this point. The last engine I blueprinted was a Ford 302 some 20 years ago.
