Hi,

I have an '88 Ford F800 dumptruck, it has started smoking white smoke at startup, but it goes away after it goes warm. I lost a 1000RPM at idle, I developed a miss in the motor, I replaced three of the fuel injectors because thats all I could get ahold of, but it didn't do any good. The three I took out I put them in the last three holes, and no change. I did adjust the valves, no change. I was wondering if it could be a blown head gasket, or..? I did not take a compression check yet. There is approx. 65k miles on the motor. It has a turbo, but I checked it - everythings ok.

Thanks for your time and help,
Mike

Here's what I found... but this is for 6.9L & 7.3 IDI engines so you know

Smoke analysis

White smoke:
Caused by unburned fuel passing through the engine. Some white smoke is normal on cold start-ups.
Excessive white smoke could be an indication of inoperative glow plugs, loose injectors, low compression from worn rings or bent connecting rods, or coolant leak into the cylinders.

If you have a blown headgasket you probably won't keep coolant in the radiator. You can check for excessive pressure in the cooling system,But also check Tek's memo.Probably that. To check for coolant, you can remove the rad cap and (engine preferably cold) run the engine to temp and watch the coolant level. If it varies a lot or has bubbles in it or smells smoky,It is really possible that you have a gasket leaving the premisis.I know that Cummins makes a kit to check for exhaust in the coolant.Don't know the cost of the kit.Check for a reliable mechanic.he may already have a tool to do the test.

Just curious about the 6.6L in '88? According to my knowledge, an '88 should have a 6.9L Anyway, let me know, I could be wrong!! Is it made by International, like Ford's other diesels? -Frank

I also have 88' F-700 with 90' 6.6l made in Brazil engine. It smokes white and misses a little on cold starts but goes away after warm and runs good. If i rev engine to 2500 a few times seems to clear out sooner. Hope its not a major problem with these engines.
