I have a 450e john deere dozer with a mechanical pump that I ran out of diesel fuel while doing some work. It was running perfectly before this with no hard starts or anything wrong. Upon refilling the tank and bleeding the line the machine would only crank and die. It does this in about 2 to 3 second intervals. I start it and 2 seconds later in sounds like it runs out of fuel and dies. One weird thing is this. There is an adjustment on the pump that has a screwdiver slot and a locknut or nut to keep it tight. If I loosen that up so that fuel can come out of it the engine runs like its brand new. It runs perfect.........with fuel running all over the place. Put that back in and tighen it and the machine dies. Anyone ever seen this?

It sounds to me that the return outlet relief valve is stuck/pluged up. Its the fitting comming out of the top of the pump and the return line hooks to. It has a small plastic plunger inside. Remove it and clean it. U need to be able to blow through it. With no return flow out of the pump it builds to much pressure and does funny things.
