I have a problem with a fresh rebuild on a 4039T John Deere engine that I hope you can help me with. I completely rebuilt this engine for a customer and ran it no load for about 8 hours before giving it back to them. They had it in service for about 10 hrs and it developed excessive internal noise. Upon dis-assembly I found that it had spun the balancer shaft bushings out of the block on the left balancer shaft and greatly damaged the balancer shaft bore in the block. As I see it, due to the great loss in oil pressure it also spun most of the main bearings and #2 rod bearing.

I have been building diesel and gasoline engines for over 20 years. This engine was meticulously put together with all John Deere parts paying particular attention to all clearances and assembled according to a John Deere tech manual for this engine. I had a local diesel machine shop install the balancer bushings in the block and they also rebuilt the cylinder head and rebush/check the con. rods and I assembled the engine. The only problem with this engine prior to the rebuild was liner porosity. It is in a power unit turning a blower that pressureizes a tank to empty dry cement.

I purchased a 4039 core and rebuilt that short block and assembled it with all the parts from the first engine. Apon visual inspection of all of the internal parts from the second core, this engine had very low hours and little wear. Within about 25 total hours this engine had almost the same failure. The right balancer shaft bushings instead of the left and #4 rod bearing instead of #2.

After the first failure (and the second) I did a lot of research on this and similar engines. I find that some of the builders/machine shops say that there where problems with these balancer shafts and others say no. I personally have not and have not had a single failure out any of the countless engines I have built over the years.

I am stuck with 2 trashed 4039 engines with no explanation as to what caused almost the same failure with both engines. I am baffled with this problem along with other builders that I have talked to. Any insight or info that you might have would be greatly appreciated

Probably completely unrelated but I was rebiulding a Perkins 152 - 3 cylinder and when I went to install the "New (made in India)" oil pump I discovered much to my dismay that I thought I saw dirt inside the new vacum packed pump. I pulled it apart to discover that there was casting sand from a bad core, part of which was still imbedded in the casting. I cleaned it with picks and air and satisfied myself that I had gotten all the dirt out. Had I not taken the time to check inside the "new" pump the engine would have lasted several minutes.
Since so much of our aftermarket stuff comes from competetive bid suppliers with minimal inspection it's a wonder that things work at all.

We have had that also when the bushings are installed and not excatly in correct. Install the shaft rotate look for high spots and clean up. Second when they install them they must go in tight.
The engines aren't wasted, you can just install the bushing 180 degree out, blocking off the oiling holes, and running the engines unbalanced.Deere offers the engine with a 4600 code balanced or unbalanced. If possible rubber mount the engine in its application, non balanced 4 cylinders engines are shakers.

Always keep moving forward.
