have a Lister 3900648LPWS3A-42 and I am having problems with the engine hunting while ticking over ? ( 30 HP, 3cylinder water cooled.)

Can anybody help.

I have changed the oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter. No difference

Hi,
Check around the gov and racks not sure of their setup but the most likely spot to check,
see that rack is moving freely and check to see if the injector pump has to have oil in it some do useally a small plug and has to be filled with diesel.

In response to you hunting problem i recently rebuilt a three cylinder lister engine and had a problem with hunting. If your engine is the same it has individual jerk style injection pumps and the fuel control rack and governor connections are inside windows under the pumps. Remove the plates and check the connections and adjustments. Also a simpler check may be air in your fuel system, this may also cause the engine to rev up and die down . hope this may help you .

I understand 'hunting' as a type of surging... where the engine revs up slightly and then slows down - repeating this cycle in a rhythmic pattern. It usually occurs around idling (or just above) and when the engine has no load on it. The most likely causes are in the fuel pump:- sticking rack bar and/or worn governor. Some very early Leylands (the famous O.600) had pneumatic control to the fuel pump rack, and were very prone to this problem. They required quite careful adjustment to the idling speed (set on a butterfly in the inlet manifold) in conjunction with a small airbleed valve in the rack damper on the back of the pump.

I agree completely with everything said - make sure the fuel supply is in order before touching any fuel pump adjustments.
