I have a 6-354 running a CAV DPA injector pump.

After considerable research, I'm planning to convert the engine to run on heated vegetable oil (around 70deg C).

Mad you say? Not really, it's quite common these days - especially in Europe...

Sadly, it seems rotary type injector pumps like mine are very prone to failure with this setup (siezing, broken pump vanes etc). Increased fuel viscoscity and temp, and sensitivity to contaminants being the main reasons with quite a few failures experienced by lucas/CAV owners.

Can anyone advise on a replacement for my setup?

Perhaps you know if the 6354's have been fitted with different types of injector pumps, or if one could be easily retrofitted.

FYI, the pump details are :
Make : CAV
- DPA 3269F790
- DSA 166
- S/N R57681SX
- Model FX46E800/1/3130

Richie,
Unfortunately as far as i know, the 6/354 has always had the DPA pump. The pump on this engine is mounted vertically, which would not suit an inline pump(oil bath for cams etc).
As you say the veg oil does not go down well with a rotary pump,it will work, but if the oil solidifies you have big trouble.
Why are you trying to use veg oil,i thought fuel was cheap down under?
At least your not in the UK,road diesel here is around £3.65 a gallon i think that equates to around Au$11-12. Rebated off road fuel is much cheaper though.
I think biodiesel is a good idea, veg oil is separated out using methanol(which is removed after the reaction),thus it doesn't solidify,
in th UK though even if you 'brewed' your own biodiesel you would still have to pay the government around £1.20 a gallon to use it in a road vehicle.
In order to use the veg oil you might have to change to an alternative engine maybe a 365/380 Ford.

Sure diesel is cheaper here (not as cheap as used veg oil tho), but veg-oil is cleaner, and it's not all about doing it cheap.

Changing the engine is an unnecessarily expensive option at this stage though.

I guess I could try a bosch rotary pump - apparently these work a bit better than the CAVs. (the bosch's advance timing is apparently not viscoscity dependant like the CAV).

Any idea what ones might be suitable?

I could always engineer a bevel-gear driven inline pump (mounting horizontally) though perhaps this is a bit radical...

cheers,

Richie
