Just finished an overhaul on a 4108. The problem is, with injector pump installed and all timing marks aligned, the engine starts and runs rough. Originally thought the problem was due to a bad injector pump. Had it rebuilt and re-installed it. Same problem. Re-checked all timing marks, checked compression, cam operation, injectors - all good. Pulled injector pump and had it rechecked at the same place that rebuilt it. They found no problems. Re-installed, same problem. However, if the pump timing is advanced (about 15 deg) it smoothes out, but it will ony restart when hot - not cold. Fuel pump appears to be working and tests good. All this is taking place on a test stand. I'm tempted to take the pump somewhere else to have it tested. Anyone have any suggestions at all???

Pulling my hair out...

Patrick

Pmcandrew,
Have you checked that the engine timing gears are all in the correct position.Sometimes the keys in the shafts become dislodged as the gears are installed or due to gear mesh, marks become misaligned.
I had this problem on a Bedford 330 engine, couldn't get enough timing on pump.I paid again to have pump checked, still the same.
Had to take cab of lorry again and take timing cover off the engine.
It turned out that key had slipped off the shaft during installation allowing gear to turn on shaft, this had retarded the timing to the point where i could not line up the timing marks inside the pump housing, even on full rotation of the pump casing.Luckily key was just lying at bottom of gear casing.
Have you timed the pump using the spill marks inside the access cover? or are you relying in external cut marks on the injector pump housing? as no two engines are the same, this could be an exchange pump.

We are a Perkins Master Dealer and an authorized fuel shop. We also rebuild engines. You might need to check you fuel pump drive gear and make sure the insert is lined up with the gear. There is a Letter stamped in the gear and the insert that must align. This could be your timing difference. We have run into this problem before. Also you can not always go by the internal snapring position as it sometimes get set wrong. Gary
