Hi , I've recently brought a Mobile home /Bus and on the trip back home of a 1000 miles the engine used 28 litres of oil. This Bus had been sitting for 5 years although I was told by the previous owner that he started it once a month or so......Also , I could only source 15W-40 while on the road. After the first six hours we (A mechanic friend ) pulled the injectors to find them in a very sad state , We could only pull 5 as the lift pump was a bit iffy and we didn't want to disturb the Diesel line that ran over the top of the front injector. With 5 injectors cleaned up the motor ran a lot better and more economical (approx 5.2 K's per Litre ) . Oil Pressures good running at between 50-60 and dropping to 20 at idle.

We nursed her home and to date I've brought a Lift pump Kit and will be pulling all six injectors this week /maybe next... to clean and refurbish them as well as pressure testing them to ensure correct spray ....

The Engine sounds and ran reasonably strong considering the state the injectors were/are in with no knocks etc but then there's the oil usage?

Plan at this stage is to get this engine tuned and check the thermostat to see she's running at correct temps (btw , we had no over-heating issues) as well as checking intake and the sump breather for possible scavenging .

Would anyone have any advice as to what else we could be looking for?

At the end of the day I suspect we will pull the head to measure the bore and see how far we need to go ....that being the case would anyone have any idea as to where I might buy Engine Kits? Pistons, sleeves and rings ? After-market preferably in an attempt to keep costs down.

I'd be grateful for any information anyone might have ....

hey mate
below can be reasons:

1- Using the vehicle on low speed.
2- dirty fuel system (Fuel filters diesel tank etc...).
3- Faulty injectors resulting in over fueling.

'It took 8 months to sell a Case engine that I listed on DieselEngineTrader.com - but I was very happy because it had been in our inventory for over 3 years! Was very happy with the price I got for it too!'

'Listed a Perkins T6.354 on DieselEngineTrader and sold it after 5 month. With a listing fee of $5.00 per month and no commission, it was much cheaper and more effective than the magazine we also used.'
