water truck dilema

I have a 2004 freightliner with a C7 engine, and the part cost is just way too high to make it a sound investment. We are looking into getting a different unit all together so I was thinking of going with an older and more basic engine like a 5.9 cummins, 7.3 ford or a small detroit
Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming you are using a similar application, nothing beats international for cost and ease of maintenance. 5.9 Cummins and 7.3 Ford aren't really comparable to a C7 or a DT466. The 50 Series Detroit is almost unheard of these days. The 8.3 Cummins is OK if the fuel system is not a CAPS setup for the fuel system. Mercedes is a joke in my opinion. Worst case scenario a works kit (all parts necessary for an in-frame overhaul) is $1300 for a DT466. The new internationals 4200,4300,4400 aren't as bullet proof as the old 4700/4900s but their at least as reliable as anything else.
