i have a 2001 freightliner that around 45 mph to about 47 mph just shakes the heck out of the truck. had new tires put on, balanced, all that stuff. tightened the steering gear a bit, that helped some but could it have damaged the gear e nough that i need to replace the gear now? it was worse before i adjusted the gear, went from about 42-48 mph. makes no difference loaded, unloaded, good tires, bad tires, road conditions.

Have you checked any of the you joints and yokes? That would be the best place to start. Also what kind of hubs are on the steer axle? I have an 01 frieghtliner that shakes at about 60mph and what I found after replacing u-joints, tightening yokes and new tires was that the steer axle hubs are aluminum and the fingers were corroded away enough to were it does'nt center the rim anymore. I would also check bearing play and king pins.

First off, can you feel the vibration in the seat or in the wheel? I would bet that from what you said, it is coming from the wheel. Usually a vibration that starts at about 40 and goes away around 50 is due to the king pins. Easy way to find out is. Jack up one side of the front axle. Grease the king pin until fresh grease comes out. Get all the dirty old grease out of it. Repeat on the other side. If its the king pins, this will resolve the problem for a while.
