Blue Crankshaft

I am overhauling a 15 year old Vovo Penta TAMD41B diesel engine, which seems to have had quite a lot of work done by others in the past. I think my question applies to any engine, so I hope someone can help me.
On removing the sump I can see that the crankshaft has turned dark blue, consistent with being heated. The blue colour runs uniformly from one end to the other with no bluing evident on the bearing caps. The journals are shiny and bright and the crank turns easily. It looks like the crankshaft has been heated, maybe to over 300 degrees centigrade, at some time before it was assembled into the engine. The crank is supposed to be the normal gray, definitely not blue and the people at Volvo can't help.
Can anyone help me with the following questions:
1. If the journals are OK or can be reground, can I reinstall the crank in its current blue state?
2. If not should I discard it or can I get it renitrited (or whatever treatment is necessary) to bring it back to par?
Any advice would be appreciated.
