I have a 6.2 Diesel that I recently bought to replace the gas guzzling 454 in my '79 Chevy Crew Cab Dually 4x4. Unlike other GM engines
the only numbers I can find on the block are the casting numbers at the left rear of the block. The number on my engine is
14022660. Is there anyone out there that can tell me when this engine was produced or any other info about how to
ID this engine as to year, horsepower rating etc? Is there any "real" difference in a
J code and a C code engine. All I know about this one is that it runs well, has a new injection pump, its got whats left of
its original red paint and it doesnt seem to have any EGR stuff... just PCV hoses from the oil fill tube to the intake manifold.
It was originally bolted to an automatic in a 3/4 ton truck, but I have found a flywheel from an 85 6.2 and plan to bolt it to the
sm465 4 speed in my dually.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated! I'm a diesel mechanic with many years exp. in Case International and Navistar
Engines, but admittedly dont know a lot about the GM naturally asperated 6.2, other than I've heard their a little weak
in the power dept. but get great fuel mileage... I would have gone with a Cummins, but the 6.2 is a basically a
direct bolt in replacement for a gas burner... plug and play...smile

If and only if the engine is the original color, it is either a 1981 or 1982. Those were the years that they used Allison red paint. GM went to black paint after that. One issue I can recall about those red engines was the heads coming with an extra water port on the inside of them that was blank to the block. The gaskets for those years didn't have that port blocked and the gaskets would leak coolant to the outside of the engine and drip on either the bell housing or the rear of the exhaust lead pipe. GM used to make a plug update kit to repair this. It was a little rectangle plug that we permatexed into the head. I am sure that they don't do that any more. In 1984 GM plugged that hole from the factory. They also updated the injector nuts from a coarse thread to a fine thread. The 6.2 came stock with 130 hp, about 240 lbs of torque at 2000 r's, and yes they were not noted for power. I have been an ase cert GM Diesel Mechanic for about 13 years and have owned severa. With the exception of a couple none has given me exceptional hp or torque. I did manage to get some pretty impressive fuel economy. The only c and j codes I can remember about those years have to do with the hp rating. The c was 130 and the J was 135. If memory serves me correctly, it had to do with the intake gaskets. I think one set of gaskets were heavy duty and the other were standard. One set had restrictor plates in the center of the gaskets. I personally always used the gaskets without the restrictors. I can't remember why. For some reason I have the idea that those had to do with the heads breathing better, but I can't remember for sure. Do I sound old? :0) I am only 34 and I forget more and more every day. Its been almost 10 years since I worked on one of those. As far as the EGR system, I think the early 1981 engines had limited emissions. Every year after that had EGR systems that I always removed. (Secretly, Of Course)
