Recently I purchased a fishing boat with a reconditioned 3160 CAT Marine Engine Serial No 68P. Because I take the boat into open waters I am keen to learn as much about basic repairs as I can. The engine has been running well until now. After about 10 or so minutes of running time the engine falters. Sometimes it stops although usually it restarts easily. The problem is worst at higher power. There are no other apparent problems. No overheating. No smoke. Is it likely to be anything more than dirty fuel or air in the system. What are the other possibilities? I would greatly appreciate some guidance.sad

hey there
your problem sounds similar to whats happend to some friends and some friends, friend that iv heard about. what it could be is that in the fuel fillters there could be water an same in the tank (condensation) an when you put the revs up its blastin the water through an cutting it out but when it cuts out, the water thats in the pipes sinks back down the pipe below the diesel an lets it start again!
Good luck an hope you get it sorted!!!

first change fuel filter and pour contents in glass and let settle to see water . if water is there drain tank water will kill your fuel pump . second - old rubber fuel hoses will swell shut, disconnet and try to blow through the hose a new hose is only few bucks for a roll and that will make sure its not sucking air to. third - if thats all checked out ok your pump is bad . you can give it a hillbilly test , go buy a eletric fuel pump and put it in line just before the motors pump but dont get to far to swim back this a short term fix !!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to your Caterpillar dealer loaded with your complete serial #,and arrangement # (normally just beside or below the serial# on your ID tag) and purchase a service manual AND parts manual. These books from Cat are really good. You might pay a bit,but it is really worth it. These books take you from basic valve adjustment to overhauling the complete engine.Plus the testing and adjustments section explains what the component does.
