I recently bought a 1988 Pete with a rebuilt Cat motor that came directly from Caterpillar. I was hoping that someone could help in identifying the motor, B or C model and what turbo and pump, Hp, etc.

The engine is serial number 6TB18227, ARRANGEMENT 4W3799, SPEC NUMBER OT5566. Any help would e much appreciated. thanks.

I believe this is an industrial generator motor, 498 hp. but, when purchased, it had no turbo or pump. the original 425b mechanical pump was rebuilt by a professional injection service, turned up 10% from specs, and the original turbo was also used. is this the correct turbo? what about the pump? would you think this motor with the hotter pump was turning over 500 HP? thanks.

it is a b model 430 hp 2100 rpm, look like around 1350 torque, appears to be for a fire pump.

thanks, now I am concerned thAT THE ORIGINAL 4M... 425 CAT TURBO WAS INSTALLED WITH THIS MOTOR WHEN IT WENT IN. I was told that it's performance sheet said that it dynoed 477 hp at 2100. The following is the sheet Cat provided me today:

As listed it made 477 hp at 2100rpm and at 63.1 in hg, which is about 34 lbs boost corrected. I know the trbo on the truck only makes 19lbs. But the turbo it is supposed to have, a 6N0577 IS $4200.00!! I believe this is a low compression motor, 14.5 to 1, that need the boost. any suggestions, it has excessive black smoke on acccelleration. everything, pump, injectors, check out. they are the correct injectors for the motor. But I believe my problem is the boost. Can you tell me anything about the 4w3799 arrangement, or 0T5566 per spec number? Why was the spec value 34lbs of boost for this engine. I love the motor, just don't want to burn it up. Thanks for the help. Any advice?

I installed new gauges today. bobtail, the motor idles with 49lbs fuel pressure. and bobtailing, with my foot to floor, in 9th and 10th, the motor pulled 26psi boost, fuel pressure dropped only down to 40 lbs, and the pyro went to 590 degrees. never over 600 all the way home, 85 mph at 2100.

it only smokes during hard accelleration / gear changes. any thoughts?

sounds like your air fuel ratio valve is out of adjustment. it controls the mixture of the fuel to air tell you get the right amount of boost. also check your air lines for tightness, and leaks.
