We have a cat C7 engine that we are replacing a injector in. The new injector came with a CD that contains trim files.

I can only assume these files are for the Cat program to update the ECM’s fuel settings.

We currently use a Pro-Link scanner to trouble shoot Cat engines, so we will not be able to install these files. What are these files for and what will be the result if we just install this injector without installing these files?

Also does anyone know the torque spec on the injector hold down bolts? Thinking about 20 Ft Lbs?

the trim files must be programmed into the ecm. unlike the old 3406's where you have "common" codes, like 1100, these new injectors have a 12 digit number/letter combination that has to be downloaded from the disc or from the internet and then a "confirmation code" has to be programmed as well. it is a 4 digit number. you must have both of these programmed when installing a new injector. the result will be failed injector, or damage to piston from over or underfueling. the torque for the injector is as follows. the bolt on the exhaust side is drawn down until seated. then the opposite bolt is torqued to 9 ft lb.

Evacuate as much fuel and oil as possible from the cylinder head before installing the unit injector. Lubricate the O-ring seals and the backup rings on the unit injector with clean engine oil before installation. Record the serial number for the injector and the injector confirmation code. When you install a new unit injector the E-Trim value must be programmed into the Engine Control Module. Install socket head bolt on the exhaust side of the bracket. Tighten the exhaust side of socket head bolt until the bolt is seated. Tighten the inlet side of socket head bolt to a torque of 12 ± 1 N·m (9 ± 1 lb ft). Connect harness assembly.

Note: Proper installation of the unit injector is very important. Damage to the upper high pressure seals can cause excessive oil leakage under the valve cover. This may cause the engine not to start due to a low actuation pressure. Damage to the lower high pressure seals may allow high pressure oil to leak into the fuel supply passage. This will result in excessive oil consumption.

Note: Do not hit or strike the unit injector during installation.

That’s for the info. Very helpful.

We installed the new injector this morning and took the truck over to another shop and they installed the new trim files for the injector. So all is good. Thanx again for your help.

Nothing seems to be easy anymore with trucks.

all new hires must have a bachelors degree in communications, as well as computer physics. there is no more putting a test light to a wire and seeing if it lights up or not, that is for sure.

The CATs are the worst with this. If you don't write down the four digit confirmaton code before you put the injector in you may have some taking apart to do to get it.
