Hi there Guys. check the coolant level on my 91 GMC Topkick this morning, and found oil or sludge in the resevor, engine is running fine and not overheating. Truck has about 600000 miles and never been overhould. Does anyone one Know what may be causing this?

2 things....head gasket or engine oil cooler......most likely the cooler, but with that many miles,,could be either.

Thanks desertstormboy for your response.Could it be Diesel Fuel, Stuck finger in the resovoir and smelled like diesel. Guess is about time for an overhaul. Any idea what an complete overhaul cost? Down here in Miami, FL. Getting all kinds of crazzy prices,

if the coolant is milky, it is coolant. if it is real runny and clear, smells like fuel....probably is fuel and would be consistant with injector cups. injector cup replacement will run you around in my best estimate at a reasonable shop that is familiar with the 3116 is around 1000-1500 bucks. that is parts and labor. rebuild will be quite more than that and even if you could find another engine still would probably want to rebuild that cause you dont want to take a chance on an engine you are not familiar with.

Looking to Purchase a newer truck?? Penske is selling me 2006 INT 7600 with a Cummins IMS (310HP) with 152000 miles??? Desertstormboy have you ever worked or heard anything about these engine? Been driving only Cat for along time.

depending on what you are going to be hauling, this truck and engine is a medium duty but since you have had a 3116, i am assuming that you will not be doing any heavy pulling. i am not going to put down any manufacturer of truck or engine, they are all in my mind worth having. every truck and engine is going to have their ups and downs, but you usually only hear about the downs, so if i was you, i would try and find out all the goods that this truck and engine combo has.
