Help
I have a 2000 Cat 3406E that runs great in the morning but after the first half hour when the engine(and weather) get warmer,
the fan kicks on and I start getting black smoke and lose some power. It seems like it may be overfueling and the ECM is kicking on the fan but that's just a guess. Anyone one else ever see this?
Thanks for any ideas....

the fan only will come on when 1: the engine temp reaches the 210 mark 2: the a/c is on and the head pressure is high and 3: if you manually kick it on and 4: if your settings are for the fan to come on when the jake is in hi mode.

That's why I'm scratching my head. It seems like I'm getting a cylinder missing with the black smoke but I don't understand why the fan is coming on. Temperature isn't nearly high enough for the fan and the AC isn't on. My guts say injector but I'm also not getting any codes or the Check Engine Light. Once that fan comes on it stays on until I hit the off ramp and the load comes off. Then we go back to normal. Also noticed the fuel turning black in the primary filter, I'm guessing combustion gases.

if that is the case maybe the actual temperature is high enough to be kicking on the fan, but not showing on the dash. feel the radiator hoses and see if the thermostats are opening. could possibly be a water pump failure and not circulating the coolant. are you losing any coolant?

A faulty intake air temp sensor will cause the fan to come on
