HELLO,
I HAVE HAD IT WITH THIS TOW TRUCK.I HAD THE CUPS/INJECT LINERS DONE IN JAN OF 09 SOME 25K AGO!...WELL FOR THE LAST CPL MONTHS THE TRUCK RUNS FINE,BUT IF I FIRE IT UP AND LET IT RUN FOR SAY A 1/2 HR AND SHUT HER DOWN AND GO BACK TO FIRE IT SAY 15 MIN LATER IT WILL RUN FOR MAYBE 7 MIN THEN JUST DIE AND WILL NOT FIRE.WELL I HAVE LEARNED THAT IT IS SUCKING THE PRIMARY FILTER AT BLOCK 3/4 OF THE WAY EMPTY.I CAN FILL IT UP AND IT FIRES UP AFTER A BIT AND RUNS FINE.

WELL NOW IT HAS STARTED TO SUCK THE FILTER DRY MORE LIKE EVERY OTHER DAY.YESTERDAY IT DID IT AGAIN SO I FILLED IT I WAS HAULING SOME CARS AND I WENT ABOUT 6 MILES AT 55 MPH THEN HAD TO STOP AT LIGHT AND THEN IT FELL ON ITS FACE AND STARTED CHUGGING AND SMOKING BLUISH SMOKE BAD LIKE A TAR PIT...THEN AFTER ABOUT 5 MIN IT CLEARED UP AND RAN AGAIN BUT WAS NOT RIGHT I GOT THE CARS TO DESTINATION AND IT ACTED UP AGAIN..

WELL I GET IT BACK TO BASE AND NOTICE THEY HAVE 3 DIFFERENT CONECTIONS PUT TOGETHER FOR FUEL LINE FROM SECONDARY FILTER HOUSING TO BACK OF HEAD.SO I WENT DOWN THIS AM AND JUST HAD A NEW LINE MADE AND PUT IT ON THINKING THE OLD LINE WAS SUCKING AIR,PUT BOTH FILTERS NEW AND FILELD UP BOTH WITH FUEL.JUST MY LUCK IT FIRES UP,(SMOKING HEAVY LIKE EVERY TIME IT STARTS) THEN RUNS GOOD FOR ABOUT 8 MIN THEN DIES,REMOVE FILTER AT BLOCK EMPTY,REFILL FIRES UP RUNS AND THEN DIES,PULL FILTER EMPTY,REFILL AGAIN RUNS TILL FILET EMPTYS AND DIES!.....I HAD ENOUGH FOR TODAY....

SEEMS THIS TRUCK RAN GOOD FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER CAT HAD THEN IT WENT DOWN HILL AGAIN WITH THE HARD STARTING AND SMOKING AND NOW THIS FILTER ISSIUE!....

IM GUN SHY TO TAKE IT BACK TO CAT CAUSE I SPENT $2300 TO HAVE THEM FIX THE INJEC LINERS/CUPS,ROCKER ARM AND ADJUST THE UPPER END AND GIVE IT SOME HELP.CAUSE IT WOULD NOT GO OVER 62 MPH...NOW NO PROB FOR 70MPH!....PROB STARTED WHEN I FOUND DIESEL IN COOLENT...

MY ? IS CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT OR POINT ME IN THE RT DIRECTION...I LIKE TO KNOW MORE IF I HAVE A GOV/LIFT PUMP PROB OR A INJEC PUMP GOING SOUTH.I'AM A WRENCHER BUT WHEN IT COMES TO A 3116 AND CAT IM LOST!.....

BY CHANCE ANY CAT MECANHICS IN NORTHEN,IL OR SOUTHERN,WI

THANKS FOR ANY LEADS GUYS OR GALS..
SKINNY,IL...

I have a TopKick road service truck with just over 120,000 miles on it with the 3116. I don't claim to be an expert on the 3116, but we do all our own service, and seem to be able to keep it running. I have changed all the fuel lines twice, and I think I have another change coming up. Nobody in my shop ever wants to work on them....they all seem to have fuel problems one time or another. I would suggest going back to even checking the draw tube.....and replace everything from the tank on.

sounds like a fuel transfer pump problem. put a fuel pressure gauge on the filter base there on the block. watch the fuel pressure while it is idling or you can even run it up through your window so you can watch it going down the road. sounds like the fuel transfer pump is going bad. it is just a check valve really. it is in top of the governor, not real hard to change, takes about 30 min. tell me how it does.

IT WENT BING BANG BOOM!

desertstormboy, is on the right track, one of the check valves is probably bad. as some one as mentioned in other threads, it could be a plugged filler vent cap on the fuel tank. Might want to check that out first.

look to the front of the governor, there is three internal hex screws. take those three screws out and the transfer pump is under that tube. get a picture of it before you take it apart so you can have something to guide you putting it back together. the rings in it a plastic or fill like it, the check valve is in there too. there is a spring and plunger in the tube assembly coming off the front of the head. at the other end is a square rectangler box. they are in it , that is the fuel return valve.

'The engine was on other sites, but we received the most calls from DieselEngineTrader.com. We sold it to the first caller-from DieselEngineTrader.com. Also, there was a waiting list on the engine if the first sale fell through! Thanks for the great service!'

Fran Trapp, South Carolina, USA

'We had a Mercedes engine in stock for over a year but were unable to sell it in Belgium - it was an unusual specification for generator use. Once we listed it on DieselEngineTrader.com, we sold it to a customer in England! We get regular inquiries from customers across the world.'

Rob Verhoeven, Hamofa Engines, Belgium

'DieselEngineTrader gives us the opportunity to broaden our sales coverage at very reasonable cost. We sold an International 7.3 to Florida for an advertising cost of only $15.00'
