I am new here, and am going to try and tackle changing the pump myself. Can anyone give me some info on how tough a job it will be. I am mechanical but never really tried anything like this on these big diesel motors. If anyone has a link to somewhere I can find a breakdown on how to remove and install that would be great. or maybe someone could scan a manual and email. But any help would be great... Thanks guys

Fairly straight foward job I drain the cooalnt. Remove altenator and bracket, remove the 2 bolts holding on the oil cooler neck, pry down and off leaving the adaptor sleeve in the cooler if possible. Then lay it in the framerail or try to pull it out the bottom. Remove any brackets or idler pullys up front if so equiped, Loosen the clamps on the jumper hose to the regulator housing, Remove regulator housing if you want to replace the thermostats, If not you can leave it in place . Loosen the lower hose and slide it off. Remove the backing plate and pull it out, You should now be able to pull out the oil cooler neck and adaptor that was left in the cooler. Always reseal both you may need a extra oring as there is not always 3 in the kit that comes with the pump. Unbolt the water pump and remove. Use the 2 bolts from the oil cooler neck to pull the adaptor plate off the back of the water pump evenly and slowly as to not break it. Clean all parts and reassemble in reverse order. I always replace the short hose to the regulator as well as the clamps also.

Thank you for all the info. So now I have to ask which way to go on the pump. I found a rebuilt pump for $220 after core charge, not sure the make on it, cat wants double + that much for their rebuilt pump, will the cat pump be that much better? Do you have any part numbers for the orings, or a good place to look for a cheaper cat pump or parts if I decide to change the thermostats. 1 more question, the truck has the CAT extended life coolant in it now, does anyone have any opinions on if this stuff is worth the extra $$$ or not....

I would only go Cat on parts. A engine that you make a living with is to important to to use Jobber parts. Cat will stand behind what they sell anywhere there is a dealer. I prefer the green coolant a little more work as you have to Check the SCA addiatives and keep them up. But in a pinch you can add water and not have to dump the whole system as with the ELC. The ELC is also more prone to cold water leaks and you are buying half A jug of water as it is premixed. The cat pump should come with all the needed seals with the exception of the thermostat gaskets and possibly one of the oil cooler orings. Never reuse a oring and if you push or pull or disturb a joint that uses a oring I would replace it. It will usually leak at the most inconveniant time.

You wouldn't happen to have the part number for the pump would you? It is a 2000 model, I am thinking of trying an Eastern industries pump, here is the link, is this the correct pump? Or does it have the straight teeth? The truck has 1.2 million on it and is only going to be used locally to haul equipment on a farm, so I dont really want to have to spend $500 on the pump, so if this will work for half the $$ that would be great..... Thanks again for the advice...
