Stopped in Effingham, IL. at the Diesel Doctor weeks ago to have him work his magic. Found out the truck was at the minimum of 435 so had him turn it up to 475. I asked him about getting it to 550 & he said I'd have to go to a Pete dealer & it'd cost upwards of $500 to get them to reflash the computer to turn up the power. Is there more to it than that or is it all in the computer? If not then what else has to be done along with that? Does turning a truck up usually help or hurt the fuel economy?

I wonder why they say it was at 435 and they turned it up to 475 when the test spec for that engine from factory shows 475 hp

Engine Test [MXS17192]

Advertised Power 475 hp
Advertised Speed 2,100 RPM
Advertised Torque 1,849 LB/FT

Also if they can rerate it to 475 why couldn't they go to 550. It just takes different software to go to any higher hp.

Call your dealer and get them to check out your serial number. They can easily tell you what the original rating was and how high you can go with just software. I don't think that engine requires any hardware changes to go to 550 ( such as turbo or injectors) but the dealer will check the cat system and tell you for sure.

Many of the engines we have rerated to 550 have actually reported an improvement in fuel mileage.

I was in there when the guy was messing with it on the computer & it did say 435. I'm guessing the company that ran the truck must've had it turned down. It was an old Van Kampen truck so either they had it turned down or the dealership we bought it from did. Next time I get down that way (Effingham) I'll stop by the Pete dealer by the J to see what they can do.

"All ratings are flash files only."-TDcrash63

So does that mean the "Diesel Doctor" just doesn't have the software needed to turn a truck up to 550? If not then what does that mean?

It means that they all run the same cam, pistons, turbos, ect. I dont know what tooling he has but I believe he must be a cat dealer or teps dealer ie pete freightliner ect to have the ability to rerate your software as cat gets the majority of the uprate fee.

Diesel Doctor works out of a broke down RV behind a Marathon off Exit 159 in Effingham, IL. I tried asking the guy where the owner learned how to do this stuff but he couldn't tell me. As for where they get the software I don't know that either. I'm hoping that the owner is working next time I stop in there so I can get some more information. They deal in cash only & $100 is what it costs for them to do what they do. I watched as he went through the program. Only things I had him change was max out the speed to 127, horsepower to 475, & then he did the rest. The "rest" being what they normally do which is setting the injectors, changing some numbers around, etc. etc. Next time I stop there I'll try to get some more info. out of him to see where they learned how to do what they do.

If they get the flash file (software) from cat they still need a password from cat to unlock it so that it works.

See that is the thing too I was asking him about needing passwords & he said they've got a "backdoor" program that takes care of that for them. I don't know if he meant for all engines or what specific engine he was talking about exactly.
