Here is what I did. While changing belts on my 98 pete with a 306e (475hp), I removed the lower stud ( roughly 6 to 8 inches long). replaced it with a bolt 4 inchs long. Approximatly a week later oil is starting to leak from some where in the fornt of the engine and wind is pushing it back along the left side of the engine. Can any one tell me exactly what is going on now that I did this moronic action. thanks for the help.

There are extra threaded holes in the cover where the fan mounts. I think you put your bolt in one of these holes. The original stud goes right thru the front cover and into the block. When you leave the stud out oil will leak out at the stud hole.
If you put the stud and nut back in you should be ok.

IF YOU PUT SUCH A SMALL BOLT IN THE HOLE, IT PROBABLY IS IN THE WRONG ONE BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE LONG STUD GO THROUGH THE FRONT COVER AND INTO THE BLOCK. ALL THE OIL THAT IS RUNNING OVER THE GEARTRAIN INSIDE THE FRONT COVER IS PROBABLY COMING OUT OF THE HOLE THAT THE ORIGINAL STUD WAS REMOVED. A SHORT BOLT WOULD NOT THREAD INTO THE BLOCK AND YOU WOULD HAVE NOTICED THIS. WHY WOULD YOU NOT INSTALL THE STUD BACK?

WHY WOULD YOU NOT INSTALL THE STUD BACK?

I wondered the same thing myself.

Also, was the replacement bolt a hardware store bolt (grade2) or did you use a grade "8" bolt.
Put the stud back in......do three Hail Mary's.....have a beer, get some sleep and hit it again tomorrow.....maybe the leak will go away.

Make sure you put a bead of silicone clear or black in a candycane fashion on the stud and clean the stud holes with compressed air and brake clean. The studs are known to leak oil this seems to work well.
