The only real issues that we see on a regular basis is cracked exhaust and turbo housings, leaking exhaust manifold gaskets at the cyllinder heads. Of couse can not forget about the V V A solnoids and sensors.

They were bad for oil consumption if not broken in properly.

what type of truck? most c13 are in dump trucks, mixers and those type applications. the vva solenoids go bad constantly, dont know if cat will ever figure those out. the 2 piece ones are suppose to be the fix, but have seen many of those fail as well. have seen precoolers rupture and send coolant into the air to air and clog those up to where it would kill the engine cause it couldnt get air. like TD says, the exhause slobber sleeves always fail and have exhaust leaks at the head. that is time consuming since you have to remove the whole right side of the engine to fix the exhaust leaks.

They need to be put to work with a good load within the first 200 hrs or so. Some of them were only lightly loaded and the rings did not seat. Cat was rebuilding them if they burned more than 1 litre of oil in 250 litres of fuel. The C-13 seemed to be worse than most other cat engines for burning oil when new.
They have had a lot of problems when compared to a C-15 for reliability.
