I have an '02 GMC T8500 with a cat 3126, it has run crappy from time to time from when I bought it 9 months ago. have replaced fuel pumps, check valve on filter housing, IAP sensor(twice). Truck shut down during highway trip on sunday, and shop cannot figure out what is wrong. Codes flashing are 164-11, IAP system fault (39) and 164-2 Injection Actuation Pressure Erratic (15). truck will not start. Any ideas? ,Maybe the ECM is fried, but wouldn't that throw a code for it?

Please help, or I might have an "accident" with this piece of junk.

Possibly the IAP control valve. Probably not the ecm if it is still talking to you.
Run the test for the valve and the pump. The pressure sensors can fail often too or the wiring to it.

install a manual gauge and check pressure while cranking. the gear on the front of the heui pump may have came loose. happens all of the time.

I know everyone hass there own way of doing this but when I see 164-11 in 3126B engines if I can get it running I will go into the IAP test and step up the pump. If the percent of actuation goes above 64 percent even for a moment I will change the IAP control valve and recommend a oil change. If this fixes the problem I will give the owner the formula for the oil change intervals as prolonged oil changes takes its toll on this fragile system If that checks out I will connect a pressure guage to either the oil rail in the head or deadhead the pump wichever us easier to acess this kinda splits the problem quickly in the pump or an oil leak in the high pressure rail. Sometimes depending on what the symptoms are will help me determine which one to deadhead first, cranks but will not start usually dead head the pump. Cranks or runs poorly only when hot I will sometimes pull the valve cover and look for high pressure oil leaks another trick is to set up a data log and record desired and actual as well as percent of actuation, engine speed, coolant temp Remember a incorrect reading from the coolant sensor can also make hard starting but will not trigger any codes. If desired and actual do not follow within 250 to 275 or if pump is always overshooting and under shooting desired and percent of actuation is going above 65 percent you most likely have a fuatly IAP valve. I have once or twice also had speed timing sensors fail together logs no codes and engine cranks but will not start. A electricians voltage detector stuffed near the injector wires will pulse if the are firing. this indiacates a satisfactory speed timing signal Another trick is to connect et go into step test and begin stepping up the pump wjile someone cranks the engine. this will most times raise the injection actuation pressure enough to overcome a system problem to get the engine running to help in troubleshooting

WE'RE NOT MECHANICS BUT IF YOUR STILL HAVING STARTING PROBLEMS, YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE YOUR ECM CHECKED OUT.
YOU CAN EMAIL US AND DISCUSS YOUR PROBLEM WITH REGARDS TO WHAT THE ENGINE AND ECM ARE DOING

So this is the final diagnosis as of so far. We replaced the HEUI pump at $1500 plus labor, oil change, all that. It ran fine for 14 days and logged 10500 kms, then had power problems again. this time I took it to a cat certified mechanic. His gospel is that the engine oil in that engine will only last at best 9500 k's with all highway miles, which is what that truck does. He also thinks I might have injector problems but couldn't confirm no matter how hard he tried. We upgraded the CPU, hasn't been done since 2006, and cleared the codes. runs great with the new oil. I am going to run the oil 7,000 kms, then check the engine codes to see if any have logged. The long and short is that I might have to do oil changes every 12 working days, which sucks, but still cheaper than new motor.

The strange thing is when it runs good its great, when it sucks, its really bad.

Thanks for all your help, will keep logging

those heui engines are really sensitive to clean oil. once the oil starts getting "dirty", you can tell..1500 for a pump is sort of high...about a year ago they were around 800...so they are probably jabbing you on that..takes about 30 min to install it. you talk about running km's, so i am assuming you may be in australia, and the money there may be rated a little different for exchange rate. good luck on the 12 day oil changes. glad we could help.

Hours are a big factor on oil change interval, more than kms. The GMC has a shallow 18 L oil pan, so 200 hours would be about right. If it had the room by the axle, which it does not, the larger 28L oil pan would help. Have you check to see that the dipstick is correct. Should be 18 L with a fresh oil filter.
