Any advise would be appreciated. I have changed all pumps, thermostats, and mixed 70/30 coolant. Runs hot after a few minutes at full throttle, or 20 minutes at 2400 rpms. Runs all day at 2200 Rpms. I just purchased the boat this year and have been playing with different props for performance. At first I thought the props were just to agreesive but after many propeller changes i found it just ran hot at different rpms. I have props slightly smaller than man specs now so I have good performance but engine alarms sound at 200 degrees.confused

We have this problem sometimes and having the heat exchanger removed and cleaned usually fixes it. You get deposits on the salt water side of the exchanger that slows heat transfer. You have to do this about every 3-4 years in Florida. Check for growth in the tru hull that would slow the water flow too. If you have a diver cleaning your boat he can check this for you.

To rule out the heat exchanger check coolant inlet temps. Also check for over fueling, inlet restriction, injection timing. Boost if that applies. All can cause over heating. A stuck closed of stuck open thermostat can also cause it.

thank you for you ideas. I cleaned the exchanger, and flushed the oil/trans cooler(the manifolds and risers are new, ). Nothing worked. I have heard that the 3160 engines had cooling problems, and that the 3208's had a upgraded cooling system. How much of that is true, I don't know. Being out of ideas I changed the cooling system a bit. I now have the manifolds being raw water cooled as well as the risers. It now operates at about 190 degrees at 2400 rpms. I guess I'll run like this for awhile, see if it works well.

I don't know about your 3160 running hot, but I have a pair of 1987 3208's in my boat that had the same problem. After flushing out, and cleanning every thing in the raw water sistem , I had a Caterpiller mechanic look at it and he flushed out the engins, raw water swstem with "muratic acid". While the engins were running, he poured 2 gal. into the raw water strainers of each engin. Let them set for about 20 min. the system gurgled, got warm, he restarted each engin the crap came out the exhaust and my problem was gone. I took the boat out, ran it at 2800 RPM for about 1/2 hour. it ran fine. Good Luck

Thank you for your ideas. It seems I have corrected the problem. It seems that the 3160 used a smaller raw water pump(32 gph) to cool the system. The change that was made in those systems was that they put a large pump (60 gph)in. After replacing the pump in one engine there was a noticable difference.
