I'm a big Cummins fan, have owned Big Cam 855 blocks and N-14s, I KNOW what they are !! But somebody give me the Readers Digest version of the ISX before I buy something I may regret. SPECIFICALLY, give me some mileage figures they've seen before it needed an overhaul with good oil change intervals, and tell me about the shelf life of that fancy high priced VG turbo before it would NORMALLY need replacing. I'm probably like a lot of you on this forum and that is you DO NOT NEED all this electronic sh*tuff on a diesel but we all know it's here to stay. I know a N-14 would run a million plus before it would need overhauling, those engines were built stout like the ol' KT's as far as their bottom ends but how about a million out of an ISX before overhaul ? Normal ? More ? Less ? Educate me on the pro's and cons of this engine. I'm STILL a Cummin's fan but I gotta look at the operating cost. I've owned all 3 major brands and each one has it's little querks, I'm just trying to learn about the ISX's because I'm out of the loop on that particular engine. I welcome all comments, ESPECIALLY from an O/O or small fleet owner that run's this engine. I have learned that a inframe on the ISX runs about $15k and up, so Cummins has finally caught up with CAT on that one particular cost !! Thanks a lot.

Hi. I work for a KW dealer. Over all the isx is a fantastic engine its all the after treatment devices thats on this engine that suck. The older isx 05 06 07 the egr cooler was a good cooler internally, just externally they sucked. The outer bellow that attached to the egr always broke, so you would have to change the whole cooler. Now on the 08 09 and 10 engines outer design of the cooler is great no problems, its just no enternally they suck, they start using coolant and when you dont find it on the ground its going into the intake, so u change the cooler and then a week or two later your replacing the compressor head because the unloader is sticking because water gets into the intake and the water gets into the unloader and makes it stick open so in turn your truck won't build air. Last week I changed a egr cooler, the customer took the truck used it 2 days and the unloader went bad so we changed it. Monday truck came back check enine light on for delta differential sensor, after toubleshooting code found egr valve bad. My belief is that all this is tied into the start of the failing egr cooler some other mechanic s may disagree. But for the most part engine is great, you're right though inframe is 12,000 or more. And all these after treatment parts are expensive. Also DPF system is a pain especially with not proper regens when needed, but the dpf is a pain no matter what engine. hope this helps.

I run a small independant shop in the south east. We have a local Cummins, also IH and Freightliner dealers so I don't see as many local Cummins as I do others. What we see mostly is guys coming in off the interstate. My experience has mostly been replacing engine accessories, cracked exhaust manifolds and a few counterbore problems. Since these engines are still fairly new, I wouldn't have expected the counterbore problems yet, but still... They had a problem with rear seals too, but I haven't seen one with a bad rear seal in about a year so it must have been a run on them. What I'm mostly disapointed in is Cummins in general is parts availability. I notice it more because the guys I deal with mostly are not local's and need to get where they are going so waiting several days for a turbo is a big deal to them. Otherwise the lower end seems bulletproof.

Hi all,
I know alittle about ISX and QSX construction engines, in our region, this type of engine has big problem with its, CORE-COOLER, isx and qsx series has double horizental oil coolers, i think cause of this problem was its coolant quality.
The injection line has designed by Cummins-Scanis, it has 4 solenoid for injection , 2 of them for firing, the other ones for timeing, usually these solenoids have a failure.
and I have the QSX wirineg diagram...
