Could someone please explane the adjustment procedure when adjusting the valve clearence and injector settings. I thought you adjusted these when the valves were closed for each setting but I guess I was doing it wrong by not using the overlap method !! I always set each when the lob on the cam(for each) was at the lowest point but i guess that is not the wright way to do it !! I have never watched someone do it that way and was wondering if someone had the time to explane it. I always try to do things the wright way but cant do this procedure because I dont know how !! Anything you could point out to me would be great. I would rest much easier knowing the job was done properly and I wouldnt be sacraficeing performance for knowledge. Thanks to anyone that can help. The engine is a 2002 non emission 1850 tq.

Note :the screen will not let me spread out the lists

The first row of numbers is the cylinder with valve overlap
The second row of numbers is Set valve on Cyl#
The third row of numbers is set injector height on Cyl#

Ok cylinders are numbered 123456 from front of engine to back of engine. Take a big ratchet and rotate engine clockwise direction and watch the rocker arms, look for any cylinder that you see the intake valves open and close and the exhaust starts to open .Whatever cylinder you see this occur on stop as soon as you see the exhaust valve just start to open this is the overlap. Which ever cylinder you see this happen on look at the chart I put above and start there. {For instance, You rotate engine over and # 2 cylinder intake valves open and close and the exhaust valves just start to open stop rotating engine at this point and adjust valves on #5 cylinder and injector on #3cyl. after you adjust these rotate engine again clockwise the next cylinder that will have overlap is then going to be cyl#4 {#4 is the next on the list}you wont be turning the engine very much as soon as you see the overlap on #4. set valves on cyl#3 and injector on cyl#6 then turn engine over until cyl#1 has overlap and adjust valves on cyl#6 and injector on cyl#2, see the pattern! Then rotate to the next cylinder which would be #5 and adjust valves on cyl#2 and injector on cyl#4 } The list on the left that says- Cylinder with valve overlap- will be the sequence of the order of the cylinders that are going to overlap each other as you rotate the crankshaft so whichever cylinder that has overlap at the start, The next cylinder under that one in the list will be the next set that will have overlap and the two lists show which cyl to adjust ,continue until until all 6 are completed. You'll get the hang of it . My first time took me like 6 hrs now it takes about 2 to do the whole ovehead.
Never set injector on the same cylinder that you set the valves on at the same time!!!! Intake valves set at .008 exhaust valves set at .026 {pre 1991 exhaust set at.020}

Stump is 100% corect on the procedure. Use the injector timing setting on the label. I use the intake valve to tell me when the overlap occures because I leave my 'tee' handle in the allen hole and watch the movement there. Better than watching that damn little valve.

i thought the overlap procedure was when exhaust valves close and intake start to open in the direction of engine rotation ?
