I am in the process of re-installing the head on my dad's ~48' model Allis-Chalmers HD-5 and would like to know what sealant to use on the paper oil gasket that installs between the cylinder head and block (around the outside of the metal head gasket). I have never worked on one of these and only want to do this once so I want to use the right sealant. The gasket set I am using requires that two paper gaskets be stacked to get the correct thickness. What sealant do you recommend for the metal head gasket? The engine dropped a valve and it holed one of the pistons, thus the reason for removing/reworking the head. Someone gave dad a torque value for the head bolts of 170-180 ft. lbs. Is this correct? Many thanks.

Although it has been quite a while since I did one of those, I don't remember ever having a problem putting the head gasket on dry. Where did you get the gaskets? I do remember the HD5 having HV7 injectors, not that you asked, but....well....where did you say you got the gaskets?

I have built about 6 or 7 engine's and nothing you described brings back any memories. Torque on the head bolts is ok.

Sorry for my goof, I hit the return button before I had entered any text. I'll have to check the maker of the gasket set. My dad bought it in Baton Rouge. He is 81 and was a parts manager at the Allis Chalmers dealership here for many years but has had a couple of strokes and can't remember exactly what sealant to use. I'm pretty sure just putting a thin layer of grease or anti-seize on the head gasket would be fine, I'm more interested in what to put on those paper oil gaskets that surround the metal head gasket.

Many thanks,
Baxter

I would guess if you have to put a sealer on it, go for K&W Copper Coat. Get the spray, although I never remember having to use anything on the gaskets because they came already coated. BUT if the surface is less than smooth, you may just have to use something. When I find the time, I'll dig through my old books since I think I have the repair manual for the HD5, and I hope I never have to work on one of those machines again, so if I find it....it's yours.

Thanks JoeZ! We probably have one of the few HD-5's that is still running in the world. Were you referring to the metal head gasket or paper oil gaskets (or both) when you mentioned using the spray copper coat?

Many thanks,
