Question:

I have a 1999 Blue Bird bus with a series 60 non EGR 500 HP. I had the overhead done yesterday (valves, injector adjustment). While I was there I was told by the mechanic that I have the old style turbo with the "hole in the shaft" and it has been know to fail and make a mess of things. Mine is OK @ 147000 miles. Anyone experienced failure with this older turbo? Should I replace it? Anyone advise?

Thanks in advance

We had a real bad time with turbo's, we still do HOWEVER, most are on trucks because the vehicle has a standard transmsssion and when the clutch is used or the vehicle is shifted the sudden boost pressure actually turns the turbo backward and then the sudden throttle activation drives the turbo forward. Your money, Have not heard of a turbo changed because it had somekind of hole in the shaft. I used to build turbos for the large mine engines. Cool them down, keep good clean oil in engine, maintain a clean aircleaner and you should be fine. Turbo burst can happen at any time on any Series 60. Not so many on the egr engines where the turbo speed is controled better.

I think your mechanic may be referring to when the S60 turbos were changed to a boreless compressor wheel about 8 years ago, which was supposed to be more efficient and limit failures. I can't remember if it made much difference. This was on the early wastegated turbos (at least it was here in Australia) It was a service campaign which we used to do free of charge back then. It also involved an ECM reprogram if your original turbo was not wastegated. Here is a link to the service bulletin.

That's interesting. During the life of my 1996 Western Star w/S60, that I have owned since new, I have experienced 2 turbo failures on the road. Both times during a "shift". Once gearing up from a stop and once dropping a gear on an upgrade. Sometimes when making a gear change, I can hear a "chuff" sound from the air cleaners, is that what that is when you talk about the turbo spinning backwards?
