Have a 2007 westernstar tri-axle logger with 515 detroit have had the same check engine lights since truck was new 82,39 and 47 . First two being the worst for coming on when on a hard pull , light stays on and derates.Shut off for say 1 min start up and fine for awhile maybe 1 min or 2hrs till it comes back on .have had to shop many times for this. Have had the egr valve tested and v-pod and always works at shop .This being said when it derates i loose boost and egts get hot very fast in return cracks center section on ex- manifold. On my 4th one has always been warranty but is getting old going to shop for same old thing .My question is could it be the v-pod or egr valve also when the light is on i hear more exhaust and turbo whistel. This is my first detroit in 20 yrs of driving log truck Im happy so far but when i ask why this keeps on happening know on knows.Have drove all cat other than this not a bad engine they all have their quirks. Any help would be great in solving this problem thanks!

Code 47 is for excessive boost pressure, possibly faulty sensor or turbo output is excessive. Code 82 is for delta-p pressure circuit or egr temp circuit low- meaning a wiring issue or connector to the sensors. code 39 has 7 possibilities all egr codes. If you are loosing boost then the turbo speed has gone down for a reason or the egr valve has closed. Just because the v-pod works when the engine is cold may not work when the engine gets hot. Seen quite a few with this problem. Center sections cracking or warpage means excessive heat from ??? Tunne up done properly or recently??? EGR cooler plugged?

Thanks gonefishen for response ,when the ck engine light is on it must be the v-pod isnt responding and the rod on the turbo isnt in the rite place and wont spin the turbo to get rid of the heat .I think thats whats up with exhaust manifold cracking. Yes tune-up was done 40,000 miles ago at fyda freightliner it should be rite . I'll check egr cooler the truck has 247,000 miles and 9000 hrs,is this about time the cooler plugs up ? The v-pod has been checked with computer at fyda and always works, I've been thinking about buying a v-pod to see if it fixes this. If it doesnt I'll have a spare anyhow. This winter i had a air line from the compresser that got a hole rubbed in it under the loader ,could have got some dirt in the tank and made its way to v-pod ,its fed from this tank know that for sure. My last truck was a cat c 15 when it got hot engine would shut down then after it cooled down would be fine replaced the ecm no more problems ,they said it could have been a bad solder joint on circut board.Could this be whats going on with the v-pod ? I've been reading on this site for 2yrs now and decided to join to see if anyone could help me with this. Thanks

I too had the same problem on my 06 westernstar tri axle logger and after several turbos, vpods and all the other stuff, it ended up being the plug on the turbo boost sensor ! And i found this myself last week! Had it at the dealers for some final warrenty work and told them about the plug and they replaced it and all is good! I had intemitting turbo boost ,codes ,shut down on hard pulls ,all the stuff palogger talked about! Hopefully you can fix your 515 this easy! I was at wits end with this happing off and on for 5 years! After the initial warrenty ran out it was 300 bucks every time i took it back, and they would do the same stuff, new turbo, vpod delta p,and boost sensor! It was so bad that i had the shut down taken out and just had it flash the shut down message so it wouldn't shut itself off on a hard pull!

Thanks serco 7500 for reply ,I looked at boost sensor plug mine looks good ,what exactly what was wrong with yours? Did have a friend that had some of the same problems he did say detroit found a dirty egr plug. Not sure how it unplugs in a bad place to see but i want to check it also. Serco 7500 are you happy with the power your truck has ? It just sucks that when that dumb light comes on you have to pull over and shut it down and wait a few min and go again ,feel like a sitting duck for the portable scales to drive by and then you've been had! Thanks again for your input I can get more info on here than at the shop, I ask questions and feel like I'm complaning about same thing but my warranty is the same as yours dont mind paying 300 bucks but solve the problem dont just keep on telling me I dont know and that I'm the only guy with this problem!

Palogger when shes running right its a animal! Did you have them take out the shut down mode? Mine has been set to just have the shut down chech engine lisght to come on, and if you pull the plug off the boost sensor all you have to do is closes the prongs up so it makes a good connection! They look good looking at them but are loose when plugged in!

Thanks 7500 I'll check that tomarrow was looking at plug for delta p sensor one contact doesnt look like its making a good conection . If your looking for more power, check out PDI they can work wonders with all detroits cummins and cat! Like you said when it works its good can't beat it but their all that way all got their problems. No mine is not set to shut down did that when new ,had a stick pull the wires out of speedo sensor while comming out of the woods on a cat one time 75 mile haul ran derated thought I'd never make it to international shop! I'm thinking from what you have said and gonefishen also more I think about it's a plug or in the wire harness some where. Thanks again!
