Hey guys, have been having a problem with one of our '08 detroit 14L egr'd engine. The temperature guage reads at 145 degrees then when you rev the engine it will climb to 160. once you let off the throttle, it drops back down to 145. i swapped dash panels with a similar truck on our yard, and it does the same thing. The temp sensor was replaced a few days ago. Have checked the wiring from the sensor to the ecm and have found no nicks, or breaks in the wiring. Replaced the thermostats today with no change. Any ideas? thanks.

I dont know what could be the problem, but, if it drops 15 degrees by the time you let off the throttle, I dont see how it could of been the thermastats. that drop is too quick to be accurate i.m.o. wish I could be of more help. some one here should be able to get you some info.

update,,,the alternator is charging at 14.7 volts. they changed the alternator thinking it was a faulty regulator, but when the new alternator was installed, the 14.7 volts was still being charged. would a high voltage from the system be causing this? the charging system is another problem with the truck...but its not boiling the batteries and have not seen a high temp fault from the coolant.

update: disconnected alternator with no change. if you disconnect the wiring harness at the firewall, the temp guage goes to below 100 like it should. prior to starting the engine this morning, the temp guage shows 150 degrees. we just acquired these trucks from another fleet, and cannot connect to the ecm using our dddl program. we were able to connect when we first got them, but now unable to connect to any of the 5 we just got. another problem for all to try and help me with. thanks a bunch guys.

You need the newer laptop program to communicate with DDEC 6. DDEC 5 will connect to the DDDL program. If they are DDEC 5 engines find out why you cannot connect VIA the comm port. We did find several trucks had a 12V power issue at the comm port. Also remember that the grtound circuits are connected to 2 common connections within the engine wiring harness. Also there was a quiet bullitan regarding the wires being 'pulled' when they were installed to the 60 pin connection on the DDEC 5 engines. You will not be able to see the damage but I had to rewire several trucks for connections to the turbo V-pod for this problem. It is a wire pulled and the wire is not contacting the pin in the ecm connection properly, or the wire is pulled from the metal in the 60 pin connection.

Sorry to say......with a Freightliner, it is a race to see if the wiring goes bad or the doors fall off. In your case, it is wiring. Also, at one point there was dash problems.....and I seem to remember a recall of some sort on Freightliner dash panels for a problem similar to yours......maybe it was irratic oil pressure readings.....but it turned out to be the panel.
