Folks,

Can someone tell my the characteristics of the 12.7L S-60 cooling thermostat?

At what temperature would a 180 deg F T-Stat start to open?

At what temperature would a 180 deg F T-Stat be fully open?

Is it expected that during steadystate cruising ( approximately 200hp) the t-stats be partially opened?

Is it possible to size a radiator too large such that normal operating temperature can't be reached?

How does DDEC IV fan control interplay with the T-Stat range?

If I change from a 180 to a 190 deg F T-Stat, does the DDEC need to be informed?

Thanks,
David

Normally the Series 60 comes with a *190 stat. The stat starts to open around 192 and should be funny opened at 205. Some have dropped to the 180 stat because their truck/motorcoach have overheated but that is not the fix for a prlblem. The fan is programmed to come on at *205 and remain on for 180 Seconds or when the tmeperature in the cooling system drops too 195. Running 205 all day long is ok for todays modern applications. Todays stats have the 'Weir Stat configeration'. Basicayys the stat starts to open a little and will remain a little open if the cooling system remains the same. If the cooling system gets hotter the stst opens a little more. So this allows a normal opening/closing in a SLOW fashion and allows for better performance on the engine. Yesterdays thermoststa were a open and close type of stat so basically opened all the way and closed all the way. This caused erratic operation of the cooling system.

The programming cannot be changed for a different style/type thermostat, it is set in the programming regardless of stat in system.

To large of cooling system would not be benifitial to say a cold envirorment but here in town it is a necessity for a very well maintained cooling system.

Mr GoneFishen,

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I checked my receipts from my latest
DD service and 190 stats were installed. It appears that the Weir stat provides
temperature dampening control (by not opening and closing instantaneously).

I'd like to verify the fan behavior: If 180 seconds have elapsed,
but the temp is still above 195 deg F, will the fan turn off? From your description it
sounds like it will. I suppose it will then stay off till the temp hits 205? So on a long
full power pull, I could potentially see some temperature oscillations around the
205 deg F mark as the fan turns on and off?

Concerning the older style, non-Weir configuration, many of my friends with late
'80's early '90's 8V92's have cooling systems that oscillate. As soon as any load
is applied the temps ramp up from 180 to 196 at which point the alarmstat turns
on the fan and the coolant temp drops back down to 189, the fan turns on and the
cycle starts again. I take it that this is normal behavior of the old style thermostat?
Does the old style stat have a name? What are the "start opening" and "fully open"
temps for a 180 deg F 8V92 stat? Can a Weir stat be fitted to an 8V92? What most
of my friends do is run the fan constantly on manual override.

Thanks,

180 degree F operating range is 180 to 197 degrees F , weir stats can be fitted to 92 series , older style thermostats were blocking and semi blocking types - Regards David

Thanks David, I really appreciate the information.

Any idea who would carry Weir stats for the 8V92? A part
number would be great.

Thanks,

To my knowledge all thermostats sold are of the 'Weir Stat' type. The only stat used are the older ones on the 53 series, 110 series, and the rapid warmup stat used on some 71/92 series and the inline engines. BTW a 92 stat works on the Series 60 and visaversa.
