Have 04 epa ddec V 515hp about one and a half months ago fuel turned black or dark. I inquired from quite a few dd owners and shops some said alage others said injector o-rings . Put the o-rings on 6 injectors and also put 2 bottles of algae killer in and at least ran 2000 gal of fuel in it and still black. I did a fuel sample on it a week ago still not back yet but talked to tech at detroit and said that the needle and seat in injectors are shot and is blowing carbon from combustion back through the injector tip need to replace all 6 because there is no way to check this , is this true? tech said that could check for spray in a pop test but not for this . I have read other posts on this but never heard of this , i guess if i have to i will replace the injectors but seems to run ok no missing or hard starting just seems a little lazy some times. Thanks for your time. By the way engine has 293000 miles and 9400 hrs on it tri axle log truck maybe it is just time for injector replacement.

When you did the O rings did you also use the little grey tip seals on the injectors? The use of tip seals would prevent combustion gasses from getting into the injector cups.

HMMMNN weird,I just cant see that much leaking back through a injector tip and causing the fuel in the tank to darken, thats a tiny hole and a BIG fuel tank.Sumthing else has to be the cause,it just dosn't sound right to me.I'm drinking but tomorrow i'll be thinkin!!

Ok where is this bleed hole checked fuel pressure 25#@ idle 45# @ 1900 rpm ,also filters get this black grease looking stuff in them (cut them open) looks like graphite mixed with diesel. pressure is to be 18 #@ at idle 27#@ 2100 .So western star said fuel press is to hi was thinking that regulater check valve on back of head was plugged , i got a new pump and check valve but if i need new injectors and i dont need them i can return them . I thought from what i've read on here that fuel pressure is to high and causing it to over heat and break down?,and turn black .Going to call and see if the sample came back yet , just dont know what is causing this i agree with stump the tips have very small holes in them . Also if fuel cant return to tank to cool is this my performance issue?

Replace the injectors. Follow the instructions included to the letter. Hey GoneFishen, looks like I'm gonna get booted out of my job too. I guess F/liner dealers are going to buy up all the engine distributers. They're all owned by the Germans anyway.

By the way, N3 injector bolts and washers are one use only. Replace those too.

You can test the N3 injectors. Has no-one told you how at a DDA shop??? After removal of the injectors clean as necessary. Now 2 tests are done. Make an adaptor for your blow gun nozzzle, I made one from plastic air line. 'FORCE' the airline over the injector tip and submerge in diesel fuel, Apply shop air of around 120 psi. If it has bubbles get a reman injector. NO bubbles should come from the injector. You will know if 1 leaks. Careful now this is 120 psi. Now clean it off and take the vacuum tester used for the 2 cycle engines and apply suction to the tip also. It MUST hold vacuum.

Anything else???
