The best thing to do would be to buy the factory service manual it goes through each and every aspect of overhaul.

you can find them on ebay all the time. resist the urge to buy the cd unless you have a computer in the shop and patience to jump around the files. I find it easier to turn pages but to each his own.

If mine will hold up until winter, I am going to attempt to overhaul mine myself. I have successfully done the bullgear and I have set all the valves before. I hope I can handle it! I've rebuild a number of gas motors and I have watched my dad rebuild bulldozers when I was a little kid.

Does anyone know how heavy the head is? can a cherry picker hold it? I have a tractor with an I beam extension but the hydraulics area a little touchy. It's a 1968 John Deere.

I can't even imagine trying to do it without the manual. The dealer charges about $150 dollars for the paper one. Tons of useful info in there.

I've used a Harbor Freight 2 ton cherry picker, that cheap thing can get a little scary with some height and reach! use extreme care, it could fold over on you. And if you plan on moving it, you will want a smooth slab. Weight, maybe 300 lbs??

I just have a cheap one too. But I have a cement floor so that should help. Hopefully I can get in close to pick it up without extending the boom way out. Fun fun fun!

I was thinking it would be a lot more than 300 pounds?

When I had a backhoe, I used the hoe with a chain fall attached to it, lifted the head with the chain fall then used the hoe to swing it away from the truck. Maybe you could do that with your loader and I beam. That made a nice cherry picker!

Gabe, buy the binder manual, understand the timing and ask questions, the Professionals and others on here are a great help!

I use a cherry picker all the time. We replaced the stock tube with a heaver tube and made just a little longer. Never flipped but it gets lite with a cat head. The hub gets in the way some times is why we made it longer. Better than the old ford days in taking the head out the passengers door!!
