We have an 1990 international 7.3 in Thomas school bus. While driving in Colorado we noticed two things. Slight black smoke at full throttle, and about 30 seconds of heavy black smoke. This 30 second long "pulse" of heavy black smoke was only observed once but concerns me as we lost a previous engine with the same injection pump when it began smoking black smoke very heavily for a day or two. Then the smoke stopped but the engine began burning ~ 1 gal. of motor oil every 50 miles or so. We replaced the engine and found one damaged cylinder. Our current theory is that an injector got stuck open and washed the cylinder down with diesel and that failed the piston ring / cylinder wall. So, I am concerned now that our new engine has been observed to blow a puff of black smoke while on the road (i.e. not right after starting). The new engine has all new injectors. Does anybody have any ideas?
