I have an ford ET 2704 n my 31 feet motor boat. I normally runs the engine on low load, about 1100 rpm. Reacently it has got a "harder" sound and when I try to increase speed it produces a lot of black smoke and it is not possible to increase the rpm above 1500 rpm. Does anybody have an idea what can cause this?

Black smoke indicates only two things, too much fuel or not enough air. The
simplest thing to check....is there any kind of filter device on the engine?
Please check to see that there are no restrictions.

You could also check to see what the engine will rev to in hot/ neutral and see if smoke clears..

check also the hoses in the air intake system, even a pin hole will give you smoke, is turbo tight?, we had a water pipe leaking and the drops being drawn into the air way that too caused the effect. Whatever you do keep smiling. good luck

Comet, Another thing we found to our cost was that the gearbox was faulty and over loading the engine in forward gear, we only found this after extensive air/fuel, probing. Is the shaft free to tiurn in both directions? have you had the shakes ie. fouled prop? if not try this, secure boat to a strong post and run up to max revs in forward, as you state you cannot get above 1500, then try reverse gear and see if revs climb higher if they do suspect the gearbox. Keep smilingsmile

Comet: All the answers do cover your problem. I have several questions for you. Engine hours? Date of last oil change/oil filters and hours? Date and hours of last primary and secondary fuel filters? Have injectors ever been serviced? Have the intake/exhaust valves been set to standards in the manual. How old is the fuel in the tank(s)? I may be able to offer some answers to your problem. Comet: Just a few questions in order to narrow down potential answers. Engine hours? Last change of oil/filer and fuel filters? Have injectors and or pump ever been serviced? Age of fuel in tank(s)? Have the intake/exhaust valves been set to manual standards? Regards. Leonard Stern, MTOA #893

Not enough air or too much fuel would cause these problems so check air filters and injectors. Another thing have your engine hp, max rpm's, prop size, and gearbox ratio checked by a prop specialist. If you are running a prop that is too big u may be overloading your engine, this would also cause black smoke. Just some suggestions, hope this is of some help.
