If there is a wieght difference it is minor. Improved gasket and sealing surfaces and materials more orings and intergal seals than gaskets. A little more braking hp. Maybe a Ecm change. Thats it I believe.

The C-15 is about 2,700 lbs and the 3406 is about 2,900 lbs. Depending on the arrangement, that could vary. The basic structure of the engine is the same but the flywheels are different. The C-15 has a lighter crank. The C-15 has a lighter compressor. The C-15 has lighter main bearing caps. The block is lighter. The gear train is different. 200 lbs on anything that size is not a big deal. Having worked on many of both engines, I would rather have a 3406E any day over a C-15.

Have seen many go well over a million+ I am a big believer in oil samples. Most common I see is failed head gaskets.

Not many problems with the 3406E....like TD said....only some head gasket problems. Had a few C-15's spun main bearings....never saw that in any 3406. 3406 is one of the more bullet proof engines ever made.

i have 770,000 miles on it and have only put a water pump and two injector's in it since new....i did replace the turbo with a cat reman at 500,000 just for piece of mind....i will be putting rods and main bearing's in this summer, but i bet they are in decent shape. i have only used rottella oil out of the plastic jugs, never anything out of an under ground tank....always changed by me.... i feel they are a great, dependable motor also...just wonder why you would change a good thing....

I would consider a changing the dampener too. I had seen a few broken cranks in these. Was always told by the older mech. that caused by not changing it. But I figure it can't hurt.
