I have an '84 suburban with a 6.2L diesel. When it was given to me the top of the engine was apart. I was informed that it ran, although not well, and the injector pump was the problem. I reassembled the engine, replaced a faulty fuel pump and cranked it over. It did not start. I cracked the fuel line at one of the injecters and there was no fuel when I cranked it. I checked the fuel flow all the way up to the injector pump and it is good. The fuel solenoid clicks and there is fuel in the return line. What can I look for next?confused

The fuel injection pump has a vented head and rotor, this means you don't need to crack the fuel lines to bleed the system. When we change pumps out we will have someone crank the engine over while we hold a rag soaked with gas over the intake. This will let the engine start and save the battery and starter. Be careful and not put the rag over the intake until after the glow plug light goes out. If you do it too soon, it may ignite the rag.
Also the metering valve may be stuck in the pump. You can remove the top of the pump and make sure the valve will move. Use a voltmeter and put it in the pink wire that feeds the solenoid and measure the voltage while cranking. It must stay above 10 volts. If it doesn't, then your starteris pulling too much voltage. We are a fuel injection shop as well as a drive in service shop.
