Hey everyone. I have a 92 freightliner coe with ddec 2 11.1. Bought the truck 12/27/14. Truck ran like a top. Havent put it on the road yet but would start it everyday. Fires right up everytime. Brought the truck to the house yesterday to install new fuel sending unit, speed sensor, 2 new rear air bags, instaliing electric air dump solenoid for the rear suspension. Truck ran perfect when perfect when I parked it at noon. Installed the new fuel sending unit, speed sensor, air bags, installed electric dump solenoid. Wired the solenoid to ground and then just ran a jumper from battery positive to verify that I had a good ground. Ran out of daylight so went to fire off the truck to take back to the lot where I park it and she wont start. When trying to start it the yellow check engine stays lit. Flashed the codes and got a 25 on the red light ( no codes), a 42( synchronous ref sensor), and a 54 (vehicle speed sensor). Only thing out of the ordinary that I noticed was I wired the sending unit backwards bc the guage was pegged full. Checked the fuel filter (full) amd outlet at pump....good fuel. Checked both the fuses at the battery box and both are good. That was as far as I got last night bc it got too dang cold out.

I have read a couple posts on 2 l9000s that were having missing and no start issues due to other issues in the harness. I have a copy of the ddec 2 wiring diagram off of supermiller.com so friday night and all weekend ill be going hard on it. Will be checking the wiring harness per what ive read from previous posts gonefishing has posted. Just seeing if there is anything else srupid to look for. The fact that it was running greqt and then straight to a no start would leave me to believe its something dumb considering what I did to the truck in between it running and not running.

Also apologize for any spelling or gramar. Made this from my phone.

Ment to add one other thing. Gentleman I bougjt the truck from said it had a computer replaced in it. I remember now looking at the top of the ecm and seen on ddec IV on a yellow lable. Possible ts had the 2 to 4 conversion done to it and if so how much would that alter my plan of attack?

There is only a few things to keep it from starting. Need good power and ground to computer. Pull plug from computer and use a head light and load the wires from the battery. Ground and hots.

Trs, Srs sensors will keep it from starting. Most everything else that I can think of will start and shut down. I am betting on power in Battery box somehow. I been called out a few times when people change batteries and the truck wont start. They didn't see the wires to the computer that fell down. Good luck.

Add some additional info.....

The truck definatly has had the 2 to 4 conversion done. Has 4 connections at the ecm and has the ddec 4 power plug at the ecm with 3 grounds ( terminal D & E both 150 and terminal B 151) and 2 hot ( 240 @ A and 241 @ C). Also when looking up the Detroit write up on the conversion everything adds up along with again I reverified it does say ddec iv on the top lable of the ecm itself. Gentleman I bought it from told me he had replaced the ecm with in the last year with new sensors which would be the conversion and adding additional sensors.

Checked power to ecm.....from terminal A across B, D, and E, I get 12.75 v at all 3. As well as terminal C across B, D, and E I have 12.75 v across all 3. Pulled the srs sensor and checked resistance across and got 126(with tbe flow chart for code 42 saying sensor resistance should be between 130 and 100). Sensor is brand new looking and in spec (not sure how often these go bad). Also checked the resistance at the connector for srs with the harness still pligged into the ecm. Did it real quick (dont remember the value) to check for an open. No open circuit. Got to cold to mess with anything else last night.

Tonight it will be a bit warmer so I will double check he ecm power with a headlight to check and make sure I have amperage as well as going through the whole flow chart for code 42.

I have seen what Butch is saying about SRS and TRS sensors. When testing power you need to load the wires with amps. That's why I use a head light that draws 10amps. You can have volts but not enough amps to run it. I figured this out the hard way. I switched a 2 to a 3 one time and Detroit said it couldn't be done. Time wise it wasn't worth it but I got it done.

Took all the stuff off a blown DD3 and put on a DD2. It wouldn't run will I changed the bull and crank gear. Strange part is it pulled a wrist pin out of the original engine. Converted the DD2 to a 3 and put it in the truck. 10 years later it broke a wrist out again but shut off in time. Rebuilt it this time.

replaced the trs and srs sensors last night. Noticed when changing the trs sensor there was alot of oil in and around the connector and sensor. Truck fired right up instantly and ran smooth as can be. Let her run for a good 30 mins. Shut it down and went to restart it and ...............nothing. cranks but doesn't start. Pulled and accessory cover and checked the bull vear for play to make sure its not moving the pulse wheel away from the srs sensor. Its nice and tight. Flow chart says to set air gap....unless im having a real blonde moment dont know how they want u to adjust air gap unless they make shims to go behind the sensor and back of front cover. Pulled the engine harness outta the ecm and noticed it througly coated in oil all the way threw. Cleaned out the connector throughly and air dried it no luck again when trying to restart it after cleaning. Ohmd wires and no opens. Pulled the engine harness back a very good ways and inspected srs and trs wires. All in good shape. Replaceded parts of the wire loom for the the trs sensor. Then For pure entertainment decided to buy new srs and trs sensors again and replace again. Nothing at all. Cel illuminates when cranking.

Wonder if its the ecm shot.........joy. puzzling though. Untill this ran so well. Had to drive it 5 hours back home and had no issues. But guess it will be going to the shop next week.

Good fuel. First thing I checked. Being a cabover the fuel line at back of head is easily accessible.

Well got the truck up and running. Turned out to be the ecm. Found the Detroit flow chart for diagnosis on code 42 and came to the point where it said replace ecm. Don't know how I overlooked it when messing with all the wires and connections noticed that the rubber isolators were gone gone in gone in a couple spots. Best I can figure is the ecm touched up against engine block and grounded it self out. But I'm just happy she is back to purring like a kitten as well as it restarts everytime. Appreciate everyone that chimed in. A lot of good knowledge on this site. Hope it stays that way.
