i have a 93 6.5 that will not start when hot. cranks find ,but after sitting for and hour or so
it will start. this truck has 70000 orginal miles.

Next time it wont start hot try spraying water with a hose on the injection pump for about five minutes to cool it down. If it starts after this either the electronics on the pump are failing when hot, or the inj pump itself is worn and unable to build enough pressure to open the injectors.

Keep in mind the injection pump is cooled by fuel that passes threw it while the engine is running and when the engine is shut off hot, the temperature of the pump and the fuel in it increases drastically.

does a 93 6.5 have electronics on the pump. thanks for the cool down idea
i will try it. is it common to have pump failure at 70,000 miles. thanks for the help.

I do believe all 6.5s have electronics, from what I have seen.

The 6.5s are known for pump and pump electronic failures.

yes the 6.5 has alot of electrical problems . try changing the driver module on the side of the pump. unfortunely yes you have to remove the intake manifold to do this.the driver is the cheapest possibility for you problem and its alot cheaper then a whole pump but if it doesn't solve your problem then you need to replace the pump. I worked for GM as a medium duty mechanic for 4 yrs ran into this many many times. mostly after 60-70 thousand miles

one more thing dont forget to change the processor chip in the module if you swap it its located in the bottom of the plug-in hole just take an o-ring pick or something of the sort and pull it up out of the pins. it wont run right at all if you dont change it . i seen alot of guys make this timely mistake.good luck.

The 1992 and 1993 Chevy diesels do not have an electronic fuel pump...I know because I have a 1993 also, and it is doing the same thing. If it stays shut down for a few hours, it'll crank back up, but if it is still warm, it refuses. I'm getting ready to tear out the mechanical pump and send it to a shop for diagnosis. There are only a few things that can cause this problem in 1992 and 1993 GM diesels... bad fuel injectors, inoperative fuel lift pump, stopped up fuel filters, worn out injector pump, pinched housing bleed line, or compression loss in the cylinders. I know mine isn't the lift pump (new) or the injectors (new also). It did the same thing a few years ago, and I had the injector pump remaned and replaced the injectors, and it did run well until about a month or so ago. Mine has 480,000+ miles on the engine ( no overhaul so far)!
