I just bought a 1994 Chevy 3500 with a 6.5 engine, three speed manual with granny gear and overdrive. The truck looks and drives great, when I test drove it around town it seemed to run perfectly but on the way home I have some steep hills to pull.
It don't have the power that it should have and when I open the throttle it belches out heavy black smoke.
The SERVICE ENGINE SOON will blink on and off when under heavy throttle and the WATER IN FUEL light also comes on.
Where would I start to try to fix this problem, and could this be a simple fix, or could I have major problems with this thing?
Thanks for any input.

Hi, I'm not too familar with the 6.5 TD's fuel filter system and how you go about draining out water from that area but I'll try to offer some helpful tips/replacements. I would say right off the bat try to look and see if there is water trapped in a water seperator if it has it or see if water has built up under the filter and drain that out. Sure won't help things as far as fuel delivery to the engine. Also, if you do not happen to know when the last time the fuel filter was changed on the truck you will want to go about changing it because low power and heavy black smoke can mean a fuel restriction or cloggage. See if changing the fuel filter and draining the unnecessary water out will solve your problems. Otherwise after that it may also be a bad air filter or an electrical issue since that truck is the first year for the electronic injection pump (more complicated system than a mechanical pump engine). Good luck and hope I've helped some.

The water drain is at the front of the engine at the thermostat housing, I changed the engine oil, drained the water and have a picked up a fuel filter that -I will change this weekend.
Both the WATER IN FUEL and the SERVICE ENGINE SOON lights has not come on any more, it seems to run much better.
Would the warning lights cause this thing to act up or do I have other problems that I should have checked out?
I have ben a heavy equipment operator for about twenty-five years and thought I knew about every thing about diesel engines but I am at a lose when I look under the hood of a pick-up.

Hi again billieray, it's good to hear that the truck seems to run much better. That of course is a good sign. I would think you would know a lot more than I do about diesels and mechanics because you have worked around stuff for 25 years. I am an entry level diesel technician at a Freightliner dealership and have worked there almost 2 months, other than that I have a few years experience working on light truck/passenger car diesels around my home that we own. So I'd be considered quite a bit less experienced than you, but I'll still try to help you out. Thinking about it I would say if warning lights are coming on it could definitely be a sign that the truck or mainly the engine isn't performing to its optimum ability. I wonder if your truck uses the OBD electronic system which allows for a scanner to be plugged in somewhere to put out a code of why you are getting certain warning (check engine) lights up?? If it does you can take a trip to your local AutoZone where they can plug in this ODB scanner somewhere where you have the connection and it will put out a code on why your check engine light is on. Oh and it is free, they do not charge you anything. Otherwise we'll see what happens after you change the fuel filter because that could solve all your problems pretty quick. With these newer vehicles having the more complicated electronic systems sometimes it's hard to diagnose problems with it being more complicated than a mechanical vehicle. After draining the water out I would think the WATER IN FUEL light should go off, but as for the check engine light I think you'll need to get it checked like I stated above. Good luck and let us know what is going on with the engine performance after you have changed the fuel filter.

Hello Dieseliminator, I finnally changed the fuel filter the other day,- I 've been under the weather the last few days,- maybe it helped.
It seems to do ok at low speeds and when the engine is faily cool.(fifteen to twenty minutes of operation). The SERVICE ENGINE light will come on under heavy throttle or at about fifty to sixty mph, I let of the throttle and the light will go out.
I will take it to some one that can check it with a scanner, I don't know how to fix it myself. If it was an old Cat crawler I might know what to do but I don't know anything about these electronic controlled engines.
For us old guys it can be hard to admit that sometimes years of experience don't work as well as education.
Thanks for the help, when I find out what is wrong with this thing I will let you Know.blushconfused
