Hello,

I need information on class 8 truck fuel tanks as I am trying to resolve an issue of fuel aeration in these tanks.

First I am not familiar with fuel tank design, so please bear with my questions.

* Are fuel tanks on class 8 trucks vented to the atmosphere?
* If not what model year was the practice discontinued?
* If the tanks are not vented to the atmosphere is there a slight pressure or vacuum in the tanks? or is this condition dependent on the engine chassis combination and manufacturer?

* There has all ways been a lot of fuel returned to the fuel tanks because fuel is used to cool the fuel injectors. Do the latest fuel systems incorporating 25,000+psi injectors by-pass more fuel to the fuel tank than older injection systems?
* Do fuel tanks incorporate a fuel return system to take care of cavitation induced fuel aeration?
* Is it the design responsibility of the tank manufacturer to make sure aerated fuel is not being delivered to the engine fuel pump?
* Is there a certain percentage of fuel aeration that is acceptable?

Thank you

OK,lets do this again, hit the wrong darn button and the last letter went into the blue nowhere. Class 8 fuel systems are really no different than many others. The fuel suction has a tube that runs to near the bottom of the tank. (to about 2to3 inches from the bottom) and the return just goes through the top of the tank,OEM'S figure that air floats and since the air is not emulsified into the fuel it will seperate and give you clean fuel at the suction line. The fuel tank has a vent at the top of the tank that may have a check ball in it to keep fluid from escaping the tank. These may cause trouble due to the ball sticking and either letting raw fuel out ,or letting a vacume start to happen in the tank. If you open the fuel fill port and hear a sucking sound, replace the vent, this system cannot run on a vacume.

Yes the new electric engines do return more fuel than older engines. The electric engines also use a cooling plate that the ECM is bolted to,and some if not most use a cooler to cool the fuel before it returns to the tank. There is a lot of heat absorbed by the fuel in these new engines. I feel that the responsibilities of little or no fuel aeration is actually on the OEM'S shoulders and the final user. The OEM uses quality components and routing to keep aeration to a minimum, and the final user must adhere to that. There are deaerators on the market and I have only been around a couple. Racor makes one that is mainly a water seperator, and there is another marketed by a company on the East coast,Vermont I think. If you are actually interested I will find out their name and ph# and post them. These fellows forgot more about how to make a diesel run than most people know.

Many things will cause aeration and you will need to start at the tank to troubleshoot this. I would like to know more about what you are looking for and maybe I can be of more help,or send you to someone that can. Hope this helps,Jim

Hello again. I just reread both letters, yours and mine.I think I missed the point you are looking for.Just how much aeration are you looking at? I am assuming a small amount, such as when you fuel your tank from a pump truck etc. Or are you looking at a emulisified solution? Don't know how one would get it that way, just really courious????????????????????? Thanks
