I'm looking for a real good chemical to flush cooling system on a Cummins 4B3.9 In the past I have tried cleaner from auto parts stores and they don't seem to be very strong. Thanks

Hope to see some replies on this topic, as I am also looking for a decent flush formula. The stuff the auto parts stores sell is incredibly wimpy. I' m guessing muriatic acid, but would like to have some guideline as to dilution ratio, time to soak, etc. I do wish some %*!! hadnt run straight water in the system, then let it sit!

The only real way I know of to clean out a cooling system thoroughly is to have everything boiled down, swap the radiator and heater core. I havent heard of anything availible that really does anything better. -Frank

The dishwash tabs are an interesting idea. I already have a dispenser hooked up to the freshwater flush system (this is on a boat) I use a product called salt X to clean out heat exchangers and exhaust elbow. Are you reccomending to use this stuff with the engine running? What about the suds?

dishwasher tablets only work well to clean out any oil based products IE-in the event of an oil cooler failure. The Cummins Dealer I used to work for sold a product called retore which was an acid based product which I had some success with as a mechanic.

Soda crystals.( Dilute to taste.( joke). Talk to your wife she may have a packet under the kitchen sink.
Most good proprietory coolant system flushes use some kind of caustic substance, soda being one of the most caustic ( I used to use caustic soda but it's to be treated with kid gloves and handled VERY carefully) and mixed correctly depending on size of engine )(don't know exact proportions, have been at it for 45 years ,so I JUST KNOW!,) use your judgment, don't be afraid it's just an engine, if not sure then err on the side of caution and use less rather than more and do it twice Etc). 1/ remove stat: 2/ Re-fit hoses Etc: 3/ Add solution to engine, top up with fresh water and run up to temp:. 4/ Allow to cool, drain system and flush through, (best through heater hoses). If possible remove radiator and reverse flush it and flow test it ( if no professional equipment available then be aware that water should come out as fast as you can put it in, also feel the weight of the rad; when empty. If it feels much to heavy then it's probably blocked or partially blocked. Re-fit stat, re-fill system, run and test. Rember, DO NOT PUT COLD WATER INTO A HOT ENGINE!..

Also if any of you loveley people out there want to offer me a position then I am definately open to offers. Preferably in Espana or the USA.
