I've got a 83 Full size Jimmy with the 6.2. Here is my problem. When I cut the glow plugs on, sometimes they will not cut off. To solve this, everytime I start the truck, (after sitting for a few hours), I plug the glow plug relay in, start the truck and then unplug it. How can I fix this? Thanks

Also, can anyone tell me how to completely leave out all the sensors and controllers and just wire the glow plugs to a toggle/push button switch. I need a detailed explanation. Thanks

Hi,
I have done that with my marine one as all those sensors etc dont like salt water eviroments.
but you will have to get hold of some genuine 12V (Burnt out 2 sets 6V & 12V marked) glow plugs i found some ex military ones, I think they work on a 24V system.
dont try it unless you can get some.
I was lucky and nothing dropped into combustion chamber.

You will have to check your controller. GM did some switching in late 83 to a better controller. If you have the old controller which I suspect you do, the controller is threaded into the rear/inside of the ds head. It is round with a white top. It has about 7 wires coming out of it. I would recomend replacing it as opposed to switching to slow glow plugs and a toggle. A way to help reduce problems with this system is to install a heat sensor in the opposite head, (same location as the controller, It has a plug over the hole) that has two tabs on it. This switch will be connected into the wiring system for the controller from the relay and won't allow the glow plugs to cycle when the engine is over 125 degrees. It was standard on the late 83 and newer models. This will not only save glowplug life, but will also incrrease the life of the controller.

Good Luck

Is there a way to test the controller? Also, where is a good place to get a new one?

I used to buy those controllers from Northern Auto Parts. The General has a genuine AC Delco part at a comperable price. I prefer AC Delco. I think they are made better, but I am biased just a little. wink

AC Delco's site has two different things, first a glow plug cont. and then a SWITCH,GLOW PLUG ENG COOL TEMP SHORTING

What is the difference? I looked at the one on my truck, and the is a silver canister about 3-4 inches long that seems to be part of it? It has some type of label on it.confused

One is in the dr side head. That is the glow pllug controller. The other is in the pass side head. That is the inhibit switch. The controller is the one you want.

You probably don't have a inhibit switch unless your engine has that update. That switch shuts the controller down when the engine reaches 125 degrees and won't cycle the glow plugs after that. It is in the same place as the controller, except it is in the opposite head. If you have one it will be threaded into the same place that the controller is on the other side with two tabs on it. Basically it is an on off switch controlled by coolant temp.

I sent you 7 pages in image format. I would rather send them as text, but my computer only has Office XP and if you don't you will get garbage.
