Did some reading, and saw that the 6.5 liter GM has a PMD problem because of it locaton close to engine heat, causing it to malfunction. Was wondering if my 6.2 GM has the same setup? Lately, it wont start anymore when driven for awhile, stopped for 30 min., and wont start again till it is cooled off. Have new starter motor, 2 new batteries, new glow plugs, new prime feul pump (below by the frame), new air and feul filter. Dealer says "May be feul pump", but i think he is guessing. He later told me low pressure in the some cylinder heads causes it not to start when its hot and might need a total overhaul of the Engine. Vehicle is a 1989 GMC 2500K, pickup. It has about 94000 miles, and i dont think the engine is shot. Truck runs fine on the road, will start in cold Canadian weather. Cant seem to find someone that knows what to do, besides guessing.

Hi,
well the first thing i would do is to crack a injector pipe at one of the injectors and see if you get fuel there when cranking over
then check to see you have voltage on pump

I own a 1983 with 300k miles and it started the same problem last year. I replaced the pump with a 1991 2500 built to 3/4 ton specs and a 2500 series intake which eliminated the smog crap. I also put brand new GM injectors and glow plugs. This was last fall and I usually only drive it to work and home. I finally took the gamble to try it on a shopping trip. Thank God there was a bar nearby because I had to wait 3 hrs for it to cool enough to start. (only 1 hr was in the bar).
Finally I found out that carring water with me to pour over the pump and cool it off will do the trick.

SO this is my drill. I have a Vodka bottle filled with water and when it won't start I raise the hood and pour it slowly over the pump. The liquor pour device works great in the bottles and prevents it from dumping all at once and it cools quick being aluminum. I usually get a few stares from on lookers and then I chug a little for me.

The looks on their faces when it cracks to a start! Try it, it works!

HI,
if this pump requires cooling why not get a 12V fan unit from car wreckers out of ventilation system and mount it to blow air over pump and hooked up to a switch on the dash, could possibly get a timer one if you want to leave it whilst away from vehicle.??

I found the fix!
I was at my Tranny shop doing a service and told the owner the hot start problem. He called a diesel mechanic and he told me to add 2 quarts of tranny fluid to a full tank. His son has an '83 6.2L with the same problem and it works for about 3 months.

I did the 2 quarts (had a full tank) and it works! I have driven it hard, stopped at a store and it starts right up. No hard cranking or pumping or anything. STARTS!

I bought a case of fluid.

HA HA! The local shop that rebuilds diesel pumps told me to pour water on the pump too! I did replace the pump and injectors, but my mecanic found a faulty engine oil pressure gauge. Had it replaced, have yet to drive it hard and restart it hot. Will let you know how it turns out.

With new pump and injectors, pick-up runs like a bullet. But did not resolve the problem of starting the engine when hot. Have to do the cold water routin everytime onto the pump. Does anyone know when this problem exists on these engines???? Too scared to add Tranny fluid to tank sad

Will bring water with me for the time being...

yeah but if engine is warm enough that glow plugs don't come on a SMALL squirt wont hurt anything &save wear & tear on starter & battries

I have an 83 GMC sub with the same problem. It will start in the morning when cooled off (glow plug light comes on and hear relay cycle on/off). But after driving for 30min to an hour and shutting off, the truck won't re-start easily after sitting a while and I noticed glow plugs never come back on. I suspected the glow plug controller, so I manually "jumped" the glow plug relay with a heavy guage wire for 3 sec intervals 3 times and it will start for me every time. I don't know if I am just compensating for something else, but I got tired of waiting for my truck to cool down enough for the glow plug light to come on. I priced the controller around $157 from the dealer, but I'm holding out since I just found another complete 6.2L for $150 from a guy who bought a blazer for parts and didn't care anyting about the diesel. I have been using this method only when needed and so far so good. Just make sure you don't light the plugs any longer than they are lit by the controller (light comes on) when it is functioning normally. Just my 2 cents.

so many questions ! ha!

ok...firstly the 6.2 is an obsolete mechanical engine...the 6.5 being electronic (talking about fi. systems)

For those of you that have experieced the "no start when hot", and find that pouring water over the pump (crazy thing to do- can cause pump housing to crack) , or adding tranny fluid to fuel makes it tick again, i'm willing to bet you that the hydraulic head/transfer blades are worn in the pump.

when the engine gets hot and the tolerances in the pump expand, and the viscosity of the diesel becomes thin, the pump's hydraulic head assy has a helluva time trying to pump the fuel past the injectors release pressures.

in my experiences anyway smile
