Has anyone heard that the oil in a k & n air cleaner filter can cause your motor to over rev and blow the motor? Also, GM is claiming that using a K & N filter voids your warranty.

I'm not sure about the over revving, however the warranty voiding is due to the fact that the K&N style oil coated "high flow" air filters allow more dirt to enter the engine than the standard filter, this causes a greater amount of wear on parts in the engine thus GM voiding the warranties.

according to K & N, GM is not permitted by law to void a warranty because you used a after market filter. K & N is presently checking the filter for any problems but I do not see they it is possable for gm to say that the filter is the problem with out doing any test. They just opened the air cleaner seen the filter and said that caused the engine to blow up. They never checked the engine for interal problems or to see what exactly is wrong with the motor. The consumer has to have some kind of rights with the warranty. To me it is like saying you have to buy your diesel from a certain company. I do not understand, how if is such a problem, how can k & n sell these filters for that motor.

I run a K&N filter in my 1982 Chevy LUV diesel and hope that it doesn't cause any problems like that. I'm not freaking out at all, but I'd have to say that the filter is probably fine and doesn't have problems that arise for an engine blowing. I remember first installing mine in the truck and then driving it for the first time after I removed the $4-$5 regular filter. It seemed like it had a little more power (2-4 HP) and seemed to improve the air flow much better. Haven't had any problems since.
