I discovered that while winterizing my boat that I could not prime the raw water system with anti-freeze.
Found the Raw water pump impellor badly worn and replaced the impellor, but installed it backwards (didn’t know the direction of the shaft rotation and did not have a service manual at hand).

(I'm assuming this is the original 1976 engine, and have since located a 1978 Perkins 4108 shop service manual and parts manual but it doesn’t provide adequate illustrations or descriptions on how the pump drive is coupled by the timing gears or how to diagnose, dismantle, identify the broken part(s), to replace and repair.)

Second attempt to prime failed. I removed the pump cover plate, cranked the engine over and confirmed the rotation and the reversed impellor. Flipped the impellor over. Cranked engine again and noted that the impellor made half a rotation, then stopped even though the engine was still being cranked.

I removed the raw water pump from the timing cover, found no evidence of damage to pump shaft or drive end in the timing cover. Cranked engine again with pump removed and noted the drive end would not turn. Able to turn the drive end manually without restriction with engine stopped. Cranked engine again and noted surrounding gear spinning but no rotation of pump drive shaft at center.

A lead to a marine mechanic in the Cornwall ON area, a link to the appropriate service manual, some scanned documentation with the appropriate details would get me out of a huge bind. I'm assuming that I'll have to pull the timing cover and may mess up the injector pump timing in the process since it is driven off the same gear.

I'll be coming back looking for repair parts when I know exactly what has failed.
