I have a DT-530 with an Alison 5 speed in a 2001 IH 4900. I have added a TS performance chip, but the best I can get for milage is 6.6 MPG and down to 5 MPG with a heavy load.
Has anyone found a way to improve milage on this engine?

Over and above the normal-- Clean air filter, good flowing exhaust and having the truck serviced on time. Is the truck blowing black smoke? Does the engine have a skip? whats the mileage and hrs.? Could be injectors that have improper spray patterns (2 much fuel) But, most likely your performance chip is adding large amounts of fuel. If you see black smoke you are dropping your fuel mileage.

The truck has 54,000 miles, air cleaner was changed, short exhaust with large muffler. No smoke, chip added about .6 MPG, it is a variable setting and I have run it on lowest setting and about 60% and see no differecne in mileage, no skip or miss the motor runs great, truck has been serviced regularly, records show it was serviced annually when 10,000 miles were not put on in a year. Previous owner pulled a large horse trailer for pleasure and did not put that many miles on it. Previovs owner passed away so unable to ask what mileage he was getting. The Truck is running low profile 22.5's, I regeared it to 4.11's which puts me at 2050 RPM at 70 MPH

Does the engine have lots of power. I seen the high pres. oil pump and/or the regulator fail nine times out of ten on these engines. Remember that oil pres. runs your injectors on these engines, so if you don't get 3000 psi to the injectors you don't get the spray pattern.

I had oil pump replaced as it was sticking and giving a code, but that was before I tried the chip. I have had IH and Allison both check their computers and they say everything is OK, but both agree my milage is 2-4 mpg lower than expected, but neither had a solution or advice.

2050 rpm at 70 mph might have something to do with it.
