I am in need of replacing the rail mounted lift pump on my '95 GMC 6.5L turbo. I would appreciate any advice that would make this 'job' any simpler. Thank you in advance..............

You may have already done this, but if not, it's not a tough replacement. Just did it last week. A little messy, so put an oil drain pan under the transfer pump first. It still manages to get on the frame rail. A good plug for the fuel lines, once you've taken them off, is a golf tee. Another plug is a short piece of rubber fuel line that you've bent back on itself to pinch it off, or any method of pinching the tubing you want. Just disconnect the lines and slip your plugs, whatever they may be, over the fuel lines. Unplug the electrical connection and slide the pump out of the clamp. Remember, you're going to have air in the delivery lines now, between your transfer pump and the fuel injection pump, so you may have to bleed your injection pump. You may want to test your transfer pump before replacing it, as there are several other reasons for fuel problems in addition to the transfer pump. There's an oil pressure/transfer pump sending unit, the fuel pump inside the fuel tank, a transfer pump relay on the firewall, and the fuel injection pump itself. The relay is a cheap fix and it never hurts to have a spare anyway. To check the pump before you go to the trouble of replacing it, just climb under the rail and have someone turn the ignition on (but don't start the vehicle!) If it's good, it will click a few times, then should stop. If you don't hear anything, it's probable defective. Once you've pulled it off, you can check it again outside the vehicle by connecting it to a DC source. Should be a black and brown wire coming out of it. Black is ground, brown is hot. Good luck! PS . . have you replaced your in-block fuel filter lately?
