Diesel Talk
Hi all,

I have two TD71a engines and both have a habit of shearing the head bolts, when one goes then that puts extra strain on the rest and its one after the other then this creates oil leaks then back pressure.. replaced gaskets and bolts many times engines are in good condition and Volvo dont recognise a fault

Is it just my constant speed application 1500rpm that could be at fault causing vibration failure ??

I have an old scania ds11 engine thats three times the age and was bought as a scrapper with lots of hours under its belt and I changed the oil and it ran as sweet as nut and has worked on the same applicaton without a hitch ... well worth its money

Are volvos just cheap rubbish ??????

Is anyone a Volvo guru and shine a light on my problem ???

-------------------------
I design and build from scrap parts high pressure centrifugal water pumps for the mining and chemical industries driven by a vast range of diesel engines that have been scrapped or have been retired due to current noise and safety standards and I containerise and acoustic as required.

Its a salvage squad hobby/living.

Radar, Not a Volvo guru but,Check your harmonic balancer(s).They have a service life. Some mor than others, but most engine manufactures recommend replacement after any serious failure,or in the neighborhood of 300,000 miles. Not sure about which type you have, whether, viscous or rubber dampened, but if it is rubber dampened.A lot of damper builders put a hash mark on the damper, normally on the back.It should line up perfectly. If it has slipped it's junk.Viscous type.pull from the engine and clean it thoroughly and measure it with a micrometer in the thickness part at 12,3,6&9 O-clock areas. If it varies as much as .010 thousands of an inch, its in need of replacement.Just remember not to measure paint,It can vary that much.

Also many head bolts have a service life.Caterpillar,on some smaller engines (3208 etc) recommends to replace the head bolts every time.Sometimes you can get by with not doing it,but it's safer just to do it.Cummins and Cat and others give a spec. for headbolt length. It's junk if its a few thousands too long, any water pitting along the non-threaded portion of the bolt, especially under the head, and near the threads. This reduces the cross-sectional thickness of the bolt and therefore makes it too weak to do its job properly.Headbolts do their job by stretching a predetermined amount. When you run an engine the compression trys to lift the head with every stroke. These bolts do a lot of work in their lifetime. They tend to do one of two things. They either get real soft, and just stretch like putty(3208) or get work hardened and break.(become brittle). Again,I am no Volvo guru, though I feel if you check these items you will find that they will possibly cure your trouble.Thank you for your time in reading this.Jim

'DieselEngineTrader.com is a very good resource. I use it to search for engines I need and have also advertised a Volvo Penta engine and received some genuine inquiries. Our local market is small and DieselEngineTrader.com helps me to reach a worldwide market.'

Dimitris Constantinou, Limassol, Cyprus

'We've had lots of response from our ads in DieselEngineTrader.com over the years and regularly sell engines from Coast to Coast in USA. Also sold an engine to Germany and several to Canada. We don't need to advertise anywhere else its a great website!'

Darrell Johnson, Johnson Engines, Harrisburg, Illinois, USA

'Thanks, I appreciate your site very much. I just sold another engine here this week. I am glad to know there are people working to improve the site whenever possible. I am very happy to be of some service in that regard.'
