What to look out for? I'm buying '86 suburban...?

I'm about to by a diesel 86 suburban. It has a new replacement motor with 38K on it. total mileage is 155K. He says he has no problems starting it, never has. I wonder if he actually got the 6.5 engine. Anyhow, my mechanic started to scare me away, and I've been reading a little bit here about it, but it appears to be a functional, reliable vehicle. I guess I'd want to drive it for a hour and try and hot start it... any other suggestions, advice, things to look for? i'm planning to drive this thing across mexico in february... so I need a reliable vehicle.
